Gentlemen, I am beginning a new project, and was wondering if anyone can tell me; A) When did the German army switch from
blue to field grey. 2) When did the uniform change from the one worn in 1870. 2) When did the Bavarian army change from the uniform worn in 1870.

If you go on this site:
kaisersbunker.com/index2.htm
the various changes are detailed. Essentially the feldgrau was introduced in 1910 as a field uniform, the blue being retained for full dress at that time. Bavarians maintained their lighter blue as they were a separate establishment until the adoption of grey.

Kaiser's Bunker always makes me weepy when I read about Kaiser (the dog).

Hi,
According to knoetel:
1.(A)
Up to 1910 :preussisch Blau,
Than Feldgrau also known as Auszugsuniform
From 1915 on Steingrau also known as Felduniform M15

2.
after 1870 untill 1888 are the following changes indroduced:
Allowance to put trousers into boots, intro of new webbing, removel of metal edges and chain from the pickelhaube for the line regiments. Garde and Linegrenadiers stay. All webbing is now black.

3. (2.)
1872: change of the bavarian unifrom to the prussian cut but in kornblumenblau.1886: Raubenhelm is discarded for the pickelhaube and prussian webbing is adapeted. 1914: Intro of Prussian Felduniform cut and 1915 intro of prussian felduniform cut but in Feldgrau not in Steingrau.

Greetings

Good luck hunting for historical correct figures in 25mm for this topic….

30mm flats are better suited for this topic.

:))))

Vaughn: Fantastic website.

Rudi: Thank you so much, since the project will be in 15mm, paint should cover much of the changes. Bavarians with Prussian uniforms in their own color will look really good

Feldgrau in 1910. Many changes after that. The 1915 uniform had the fly front. There were also transitional 1910/1915 hybrid tunics. The einhietz peaked mutze replaced the pork pie hat at that time but all uniform variations were worn throughout WW1.

Some reserve units were mobilized in blue, jager green, etc. but quickly converted to feldgrau, including the landwehr.
