An American discovers his great-grandfather's WW1 photos taken during all four years.

There's not alot of it shown here as there are hundreds of photos and the gentleman is doing a Kickstarter to publish them all in a hardcover book but there are still some interesting items.

There's a second page of photos accessible using the "next >>>" button at the page bottom; and a page of trench photos at BoingBoing as an internal link in the first page's description.

These are really great photos. I have never seen anything like it before and I've looked at lots of pictures of the great war.

There is one picture that seems a little out of place. It's in the second group on the first page. A group of marching soldiers, just above the cow. I do not recognize these. Their hats are not like any of those shown in other pictures. And they're very militaristic in that they're marching along. All the other photos show men pretty much in leisure poses. The way they are carrying their rifles, Across their body, Is very common at that time, however, very few figure makers have their men in that pose.

Very cool! Thank you.

I was wondering about them too, Bobgnar, with, as you point out, the odd hats. If the photo's not out of order, I wonder if it's some type of local military or police having to do with policing the forest area they were billeted in that winter.

It's also interesting to see in the part-battery's group photo that they hoped to be in Paris by 1914.

And I see that they are sometimes armed with pointed sticks making the Monty Python sergeant-major type correct! No loganberries as far as I can tell but maybe they're in the summer photos. ;^)

Thanks for posting this. I looked at it a few times and went back and forth whether I should go in or not but finally decided to take the plunge. Just couldn't resist.
