A couple of 'Equipment' questions: - Would the Legionary shield fittings be bronze or iron/steel? - Corvus Belli Late Republican Romans with gladius have greaves: again, iron or bronze? I know the standard answer is 'whatever looks best to me' but I'm interested in what other people have learnt about the subject – or what they have done. [and yes, I've spotted the typo in the title] |

Generally iron. But you can mix in some bronze greaves and helmets to break things up. Centurions and signifers would have a lot of gilded or bronzed armour, helmets and belts etc. as rewards fro bravery. |

Peter Connolly shows both types in Greece and Rome at War. Interestingly enough, some troops only wore one grieve on their left leg since they fought with their shield forward. How late are you talking here? Would assume that iron would be taking over for bronze in the late Republic

I paint my shield fittings most of the time
. don't know how accurate it is historically speaking but it makes practical campaign sense to me anyway
. :-) Not republicans
but you get the drift.

Late republic legionary equipment was mostly still bronze at this stage with only the odd iron piece appearing (apart from blades). What you also had was the tinning of bronze pieces which on a painted miniature would look silver so effectively you could use either colour scheme. |

Thanks, folks. I'll probably go with bronze. |
