In 1979 Rhodesia the Govt., was being turned over to Robert Mugabe who was going to share with Joshua Nkomo,we all know how that turned out. General Wallis had second thoughts and put in to motion a take over of the govt. with all Rhodesian forces prepared to take out Mugabe and his troops, the countdown started ,troops poised …..then nothing ,Wallis had second thoughts again and called off the dance,"What If"…..A great game scenario

I think if you read some of the Whenwes, some of them will claim that it was compromised by Ken Flower of the CIO or various others who were all supposed to be British agents. The govt also thought (mistakenly) that Muzorewa and Nkomo would win.
But as Walls pointed out later, he had not ordered a coup because it would not have lasted 48 hours in the face of world opposition. Also given the position of CMF troops near the assembly areas, deaths caused to them would have enraged British opinion in particular. The South Africans also played a double game all the way through (and of course predictions of the white backlash in 1993 in SA turned out also to be the last roarings of a toothless lion fortunately for all concerned – thats btw no way to defend the appalling regime of Mugabe)

The whenwe's also still insist Flowers amongst his other sins kept giving Uncle Bob advance notice of the various attempts by nice young men in sand coloured berets to take him out of the equation altogehter.

jurgenation you are most welcome but don't call me sir, my parents knew each other. :)
