Tin Soldier Man30 Jul 2013 11:31 p.m. PST

Really excited about this rule set. I've just placed my order for the complete bundle. I am really pleased to hear that TFL will be making army lists available for free, and very quickly once the rules published. I am hoping to do 1940 French and Germans and also Chindits against Japanese.

What army lists are on your wish list for Chain of Command?

Cardinal Hawkwood30 Jul 2013 11:43 p.m. PST

Sontaran?

MajorB31 Jul 2013 1:46 a.m. PST

I shall be using the 20mm models (American and German 1944) that I alreay have.

Thomas Nissvik31 Jul 2013 1:51 a.m. PST

I already have 1940 French and Germans and Winter War Finns and Soviets that I will use. On the wish list for future use of CoC are 28mm French Indo-China(hurry up, Red Star!) and, as the Cardinal says, Sontarans, Cybermen and Daleks. And UNIT, of course.

toofatlardies31 Jul 2013 1:52 a.m. PST

Cardinal, I hate to disappoint, but there may be a few others ahead in the list!

Rich

Space Monkey31 Jul 2013 1:56 a.m. PST

Russians and Germans for me… my first ever foray into WWII, unless you count the plastic army men I had as a kid.

idontbelieveit31 Jul 2013 2:09 a.m. PST

A friend already has Arnhem forces. I have '41 Soviets and Germans. Hopefully the '41 forces will be covered from the start.

Dynaman878931 Jul 2013 3:31 a.m. PST

I play in 15mm, I already have late war Germans, US, UK, and Russians. I want to cover the whole war so Japanese and Marines next followed by early war.

I heard a rumor of a Modern supplement as well.

MikeHobbs31 Jul 2013 4:05 a.m. PST

I'm starting off with troops from the Normandy Campaign (I've got figures and terrain already)

but am really interested in doing something a bit different and might go for LRDG v Italians in North Africa or Chindits against Japanese in Burma.

as for scale, at the moment I have 28mm for Normandy but might go 20mm or 15mm for the next forces I do (again it's because I have existing terrain for those scales that I can use)

either way I'm really excited by these rules after having the honour of doing an early play test of them at Lard island with Rich and Nick

Thomas Nissvik31 Jul 2013 4:53 a.m. PST

Oh, I forgot, good thing you reminded me, Tauboy. First out will be LRDG, a project my group has been working on for a year or more.

kallman31 Jul 2013 4:56 a.m. PST

I already have in 28 mm Afrika Korps and 8th Army for North Africa, and the same in 15mm along with American forces for Tunisa.

I also have 28mm Americans and Late War German forces for games set in the ETO or they could be used for the Italian campaign.

I look forward to picking up the rules soon.

Already have German Grenadiers and American Riflemen painted. Working on Russians and I have German FJ, US Paras, and British Riflemen already bought. :)

10mm Brits and German FJ w/vehicles, heavy weapons, and vehicles are ready and waiting for August 21.

Don't have Chain of Command but my WWII forces are early war Germans and French, Desert War Germans and Brits and late war Soviets, Brits and Germans

John de Terre Neuve31 Jul 2013 5:46 a.m. PST

Painting up Canadian and German forces for late war Europe. Using PSC and AB 1/72 miniatures. Almost there.

John Thomas831 Jul 2013 6:29 a.m. PST

My current IABSM/TW&T troops are getting plugged straight into CoC, I've at least 8 different platoons ready to go.

79thPA Supporting Member of TMP31 Jul 2013 6:29 a.m. PST

I imagine most everyone will use what they already have, won't they?

Thomas Nissvik31 Jul 2013 6:47 a.m. PST

79thPA, of course not. This is the perfect excuse to buy a whole bunch of new toys! I have more than enough for France 1940 and Winter War at CoC level, but it's a perfect excuse to buy more anyway. And start a new period.

tberry740331 Jul 2013 6:54 a.m. PST

'41/'42 Germans and Russians in 15mm.

I'm also looking to using it with my Quar. The tech level is the same and a full Quar infantry company is only 40 Quar plus support weapons.

vdal181231 Jul 2013 8:53 a.m. PST

Trying to paint Canadians and Germans in 28mm for battles in Sicily and Italy. In the meantime I can use my 28mm US Paras against a friends Germans. I also have 15mm Germans and British that I can use as well. I'm very much looking forward to these rules.

Nick B31 Jul 2013 9:11 a.m. PST

Finishing off my Germans and Brits, starting Japs and Ghurkas.

Ascent31 Jul 2013 9:25 a.m. PST

I already have 28mm Italians, Afrika Korp and SAS from artizan.

Last Hussar31 Jul 2013 10:14 a.m. PST

Already have Brits and Germans, and Sunjester has Soviets, all in 20mm.

HOWEVER….

Once I've received them I'll look at how they will go with 3 men to a base 10mm, and may buy more 10mm to base singly, so I have my PBI/IABSM bases and my CoC singles. This will mean I can use the 10mm vehicles, which are a damn sight cheaper than 1:72/20mm. Lets face it 40-50 10mm figures an army is easily paintable in a couple of days, even for me.

Also, given Rich is welded to inches, I can sub in cm and get the same game on a smaller table/bigger game on a normal one.

Dynaman878931 Jul 2013 10:28 a.m. PST

> Also, given Rich is welded to inches, I can sub in cm and get the same game on a smaller table/bigger game on a normal one.

Yup, the rules even suggest using CM with 6/10mm figs.

MajorB31 Jul 2013 2:00 p.m. PST

I imagine most everyone will use what they already have, won't they?

Well, yeah. I think that's what most people here are saying!

agrippavips31 Jul 2013 2:17 p.m. PST

Already have painted in 20mm for Normandy:

Company British Infantry,
Company German Infantry,
Platoon US Paratroops,
Company US Infantry.

Unpainted: Company Soviet Naval Marines.

vtsaogames31 Jul 2013 2:36 p.m. PST

Already painted in 20mm:
German infantry with MK IVs (and the obligatory Tiger)
Russian infantry with T-34s

Fat Wally31 Jul 2013 2:51 p.m. PST

I already have lots in 15mm but I am particularly keen to try out some winter warfare situations on the Eastern Front.

Just Jack Supporting Member of TMP31 Jul 2013 3:30 p.m. PST

Last Hussar,
That's exactly my plan. I have a boatload of multi-based 10mm, but went out and got two forces (Brit and FJ for Northern Europe) and individually based them on pennies. I got (each):

1x Officers
2x SMG
3x Rifle (2x Rifle, 1x PzFaust for FJ)
Enough LMGs for 1 per squad (1 pack of Brens and 3 packs of MG34s as they are in pairs)
1x Lt Mortar (had to get Wehrmacht as Pendraken doesn't have FJ)
1x Med Mortar
1x MG
1x IAT
1x Engineer
I also bought the Montgomery and Rommel/Ramcke to use as the company commander or other VIP, should he make an appearance on the table top.

I figure that'll get me by with everything I'll need infantry-wise for Chain of Command, and as my 10mm vehicles are not based, I didn't have to pick anything up.

The only thing I'm not happy about is my ATGs. I didn't buy any new ones, so what I have are based with the crew figures on them. I'll have to see if this will work with the rules.

I'm hoping to go the inches to cm route and play on a 3' x 2' on my coffee table. I'll be going mostly solo, and I intend on pairing Chain of Command with Platoon Forward, which I've had for a couple years but haven't really put to good use (I did play through 'Blenneville or Bust' solo).

If I knew how to post pics I'd throw them up here. Actually, I wish I knew how to do a blog. I think I've got enough toys and game enough to join the club, I'm just not particularly savvy with that type of stuff…

Jack

Last Hussar31 Jul 2013 3:47 p.m. PST

Jack- if the club members are half decent chaps, you don't need to have lots of toys- They will happily let you use the other side. As you're in Texas, I would guess you would get to be the ACW Union a lot!

Just Jack Supporting Member of TMP31 Jul 2013 5:37 p.m. PST

Last Hussar,
I'm not sure I'm following you; regarding needing lots of toys, I have everything I listed. It's already painted up, based, and ready to rock and roll on 21 August.

Most of my gaming is solo because the closest FLGS is an hour away, and I find myself married with two youngins that make incredible demands on my time. Also, the FLGS is really big into Flames of War (not my thing) and SAGA (also not my thing). I did have a fun shot of IABSM about a year and a half go, but most of my games are solo here at the house.

I've got plenty of toys, just not lots of opponents… I'm worried that, due to my lack of gaming, I'm not a wargamer but a collector that paints and bases things…

Jack, the internet to the rescue again!
Start with a tutorial video on how to set up a blog:
YouTube link
That video and some playing around should get you the know-how to get started. If you want to put a bunch op pictures up, check out photobucket.com, easy as pie, just attach a digital camera to your computer and upload straight to the website.
Any questions, just ask. (Can you tell I really want to see your 10mm setup?)
Cheers/Thomas

Thomas,
Very cool, I'll have to look into this tonight. Free is certainly my favorite word, but apparently all I have to do is register on Photobucket and I'll be able to hang some pics.
I'll also have to look at the Youtube blogging video, though I suspect it's more of a time commitment than just throwing pictures up on Photobucket?
Thanks for the advice.

V/R,
Jack

Last Hussar01 Aug 2013 10:48 a.m. PST

Jack – You said you think you have enough toys to join a club: my point was that shouldn't be the barrier. I would say that any club that rejects you due to lack of experience is not a club you would probably want to join- those sort of people are the sort that ruin what is supposed to be a hobby.

Just Jack Supporting Member of TMP01 Aug 2013 11:41 a.m. PST

Last Hussar,
I'm sorry, I just re-read my post and see what you're talking about:

"If I knew how to post pics I'd throw them up here. Actually, I wish I knew how to do a blog. I think I've got enough toys and game enough to join the club, I'm just not particularly savvy with that type of stuff…"

Sorry, I wasn't clear. When I said I think I have enough toys and have gamed enough I was making a joke about the fact I think I should be able to join the 'club' of wargaming bloggers, meaning I have plenty of stuff to post if only I had the technical capability.

Regarding that, I think I'll take Thomas' advice and go searching on the internet and see what I come up with, starting with his Youtube link.

Jack (and anyone else interested), join us at the TFL yahoo group link
We have several prolific bloggers, several IT pros and people who play in 10mm. All you need in one place!

Just Jack Supporting Member of TMP01 Aug 2013 2:24 p.m. PST

Thomas,
I've been a member there for a couple years, but so far mostly a lurker.

Jack

John Thomas801 Aug 2013 3:25 p.m. PST

I e-mailed you Jack. And the TFL Yahoo! group is awesome. I've been learning TFL rules for about 16 months and when I run across something during a game I can't figure out in the rules, there's any number of folks who 1) help out; and 2) better yet, don't make you feel like an idiot for asking simple questions.

Last Hussar01 Aug 2013 3:29 p.m. PST

I don't like the Yahoo group. The people are great, but the Yahoo format doesn't work for that much traffic. I'd prefer a Forum

John Thomas801 Aug 2013 4:33 p.m. PST

I feel the same way about Yahoo!, so I had a forum built for wargaming:

But when I want help with Lardies rules, I go to the source.

Alright fellas, this has been an exciting day.

JT8 – I took your advice and joined TMW. I made one post (under wargaming->figures) with one test pic of a German half section, though it's not showing yet because apparently it has to be approved by a moderator. I don't think my paintjob is that bad, so it should be up soon ;)

Thomas – I took your advice and joined Photobucket. I snapped 15 pics of my Chain of Command forces with brief descriptions of each. Here is the link (as copied from the website):
link

I don't claim to be a great painter, and I know everyone probably says this, but I think the guys look better in person. First, I'm not that great at taking photos. Second, the brown in the German camo and Brit rifles comes out quite a bit more reddish than in real life. Lastly, in order to see the details of the figures I had to zoom way in, but then you're seeing the figures at about twice their real size, really exaggerating my suck paintjobs :0

Regarding the forces themselves, I can put a couple platoons (each) on the table at a time, with various heavy weapons and engineer support. Each base is painted a certain color to show me what I'm looking at at a glance; i.e., red is LMG and A-gunner, blue is rifle, sand is SMG, gold is officer, silver is NCO, yellow is replacement NCO (for my inevitable leader casualties), etc…

I didn't take photos of any of my vehicles; a bunch of WTM tanks with Pendraken for trucks, halftracks, jeeps/kubelwagens, SPGs, tank destroyers, and armored cars.

In any case, Thomas, you wanted to see them, there they are.

**I hope this works**
-FYI: I tried this once, no dice, but I changed the link and it worked for me.

V/R,
Jack

John Thomas801 Aug 2013 7:56 p.m. PST

Your troops are fine and taking them to CoC is going to end up being fun.

Thomas Nissvik02 Aug 2013 2:08 a.m. PST

Jack, they look great. Now I know I'll have to start doing French Indo-China with Pendraken figures.

Just Jack Supporting Member of TMP02 Aug 2013 5:33 a.m. PST

Thomas,
Yes, my goodness, YES! Due to economic conditions being what they are, I haven't been ordering many new toys, but French Indo-China is high on my list, perhaps even my very next project.

They have French officers, SMGs (MAT49s), rifles (MAS36s), LMGs (Chateraullat [Sp?]), bazookas, mortars, recoilless rifles, and MGs (M1919 air-cooled). I'm kind of aggravated that it appears each pack of infantry is only one pose! I absolutely love Pendraken (probably 75-80% of my stuff is Pendraken), but you've got to have at least two poses of officers, SMGs, and rifles per pack!

But, I'm thinking of expanding the forces by using some of the WW2 Brits/Aussies in slouch hats, as well as possibly some of the US WW2 Infantry, Marines, and Airborne (I'm thinking primarily the M-1 carbines and possibly the air-cooled .30 cal MGs of the US Inf or Airborne as the French use the seated models, which are the same as the USMC MGs, while the US Inf and AB are prone). Can also get some flamethrowers and engineers from the US WW2 line. I might even mix in some Brit WW2 Airborne officers and radios, as well as the Brit WW2 Commandoes to get some berets to mix in.

Just another thing I love about 10mm: the weapons and gear don't have to be perfect. A lot of times you can get away with a paintjob conversion.

Thanks again for all the help guys.

Jack

Thomas Nissvik02 Aug 2013 6:43 a.m. PST

I love it when you talk dirty, Jack! We are thinking along exactly the same lines. That is one of the lovely things about that period, so much Surplus from so many different sources and you can mix and match.

Just Jack Supporting Member of TMP02 Aug 2013 7:32 p.m. PST

Dang it Thomas, you've got my Paypal finger twitching for the Pendraken site…

Last Hussar04 Aug 2013 11:42 a.m. PST

Was at a Military Vehicle and Aircraft show today, ended up buying some Armourfast kits in 1:72 – StuG III, Cromwell and 251/1 – 2 in each box. Works out at £3.33 GBP a vehicle. Think that settles the question as to which scale I'll be using!

Look like nice models, and as they are designed for gamers only a few parts to put together – none of that fiddling around with road wheels!
