Most of my readings have suggested that infantry in this period usually carried flags on short one hand poles. However some era illustrations of pike blocks show flags above the level of the pikes. Is this artistic license, did it vary by army, or were flags shifted onto longer poles during battles?

Partly a bit of artistic exaggageration but the flags themselves were huge, at times over 4 meters in height. Shifting the flag was not possible as it was nailed to the staff.
