I would welcome suggestions for a suitable Vallejo colour for British/Indian infantry units. I would like a bit of variety in my 8 Imperial infantry units and so far have used Khaki, Khaki Grey and German Cam. Beige WWII. However, I am looking for something a bit lighter in shade.

I know khaki shades varied considerably and understand that khaki in that era would have been much lighter than that used in the Great War.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I used Vallejo Khaki, mixed with White 3 parts Khaki to 1 part White. It seemed to work very well on black or gray basecoated figures, and was a bit too light on white basecoated figures.

They sell Howard Hues and I've used Colonial Khaki, British Uniform and Khaki

I'm a big fan of Howard Hues British Uniform. It's much more yellow than most khaki's, but the end result looks more like most uniform plates I've seen.

I'm using Vallejo Model Color 847 Dark Sand, and I'm going to try the Army Painter Bleached Bone spray primer. Hopefully the Bleached Bone and an Army Painter Strong Tone wash will be close enough and quick to paint, because I have nearly 800 British Raj troops to paint!

Hi Alan

I recognize your name from the NWF group. If you're thinking in regards of India etc I would second Lion's suggestion of Vallejo's Dark Sand and their Light Sand would be good for webbing or for some highlighting.

As an alternative to Vallejo, have a look at HobbyCraft's range of Acrylic craft paints hobbycraft.co.uk

My old time favourite is Humbrol's Sand.

Hope that helps?

I used Khaki with Japanese Uniform as a highlight. Might be a bit rich and too dark for some tastes though.

Army Painter Bleached Bone is a very light sand/pale yellow color and may not give the desired result. It is however fine for 8th Army figures, and is a very close match for the Portland Stone used in the WWII Caunter camouflage scheme.

I would instead suggest using a darker color like Army Painter Desert Yellow, which gives a nice khaki color in this review:

I use Royal and Langnickel taupe as a base for all my brown work. Its cheap, gives great coverage and is very easily mixed with white or black.I have used it for many 15mm uniforms from khaki to battle dress.
