cfielitz16 Jul 2013 6:55 a.m. PST

Why is it that I cannot type in the name of the vendor in their search engine and go to their shop?

cent at war16 Jul 2013 6:59 a.m. PST

Sorry try Masters of Military ?

Aapsych2016 Jul 2013 8:06 a.m. PST

That's … inordinately expensive.

pvernon Supporting Member of TMP16 Jul 2013 8:26 a.m. PST

I agree with Aapsych20. A 1/144 AEG G IV is $15 USD to $20 USD depending on designer.

cent at war,

Every time you post about the MoM store, people ask you for a link to it. You might want to consider including the link in your posts from the start.

The FUD material is very pricy though – you simply can't get a 1/285 print in the cheaper materials – too rough for such a small model.

Angel Barracks16 Jul 2013 10:03 a.m. PST

FUD is not in my opinion that good for vehicles in 6mm either…. Better to go to a specialist…

Pretty marginal – personally I don't like Shapeways for anything under 1/144 (except ships), but if there's no alternative….

HistoryPhD16 Jul 2013 10:21 a.m. PST

I agree with Dom. The printing materials offered turn out a very expensive model of, at best, marginal quality. I've had a few different things from Shapways and I've tried all the available materials. While FUD is always best, it's still not particularly good and often prohibitively expensive. As far as I'm concerned, 3D printing still has some issues to overcome

cent at war: My post wasn't directed at you as a rant, though, as Javelin98 said, it would be nice if you put up a link. I do appreciate when you let us know about new stuff.

Unless I am missing something on their website, you cannot look up a specific vendor. Their search engine does not allow me to do that.

Covert Walrus16 Jul 2013 3:29 p.m. PST

FUD is a durable and highly detailed material, but as said it can be pricey – Worst of all, the only primer that "takes" with it is GW Chaos Black ( I have some Eagles for my NAC in Full Thrust)

Feximex18 Jul 2013 2:49 a.m. PST

Hello, Iīm Stephan from Masters of Military. Iīm the Designer of MoM. I read this discussions about Shapewas in several Forums, so let me give you some first hand explanations.
Covert Walrus-> The reason, why you have some problems with priming is, that there is a small layer of a special wax on FUD. To remove this wax, i used a soft brush and lighter gasoline or pure alcohol. Normally I used for base coat the simple gray spray coat for cars.
The smalest Details you can print in this moment are around 0,1 mm, the thinnest walls are 0,3 to 0,8mm. This is small, but didnīt allow detailed tracks for tanks as an example. For my models, i just earned 1-2 Euros per piece, the rest are the costs of shapeways. And believe me, i didnīt sell more than 5-10 pcs a month. But why Iīm doing this? Because there will be no chance to get a V1 Steamcatapult from GHQ or CinC or a train or civillian cars and so on in 1/285.
If there was an interesting Vehicle for me, i can made it and must not wait, if there was someone who made it in Pewter. "Cent at War" send me an e-mail a few months ago, if i could made this or that vehicle, and now, he gets his Alecto and IS-7.
One other reason is the quallity. Of course, i didnīt match the fantastic details of a GHQ model, but CAD designed Models are much, much better than these handcrafted "Bubbles" of Heroics or Irregular.
So FUD is the only Material, which can be used for such small things, but the overall Quality of the printings is very high.
If there a futher questions or if you have nány suggestions, donīt hesitate to contact me.

Will post links in future sorry to all

cent at war19 Jul 2013 1:08 p.m. PST

Just how many companys in the war gamers world will make you models in any scale within a few weeks?. The cost at this time may be high but given time but they could drop as new 3d printers drop in price MoM produces models that the big guys may never produce thanks to them i can get the models now i for one am very pleased with this.3d printing is the future.

Lion in the Stars19 Jul 2013 5:15 p.m. PST

On the flip side, there are some models that are just flat BEST made by a 3d printer. Things like the birdcage masts of pre-WW2 American ships, or the triangulated trusses of the British 'Chain Home' radar antennas. You can get them printed in a single piece, when they'd be a nightmare of parts any other method.

Artraccoon14 Aug 2013 10:46 a.m. PST

I still think that 3d printed models are best as prototype/masters for products that will be cast in metal. Print up the basic vehicle, make a mold of it and cast it, then take the casting and do some detail work, then use it as the primary master. I figure there are outfits that are already doing this, and if I had the skill, time, and $$$$ that's what I'd do.

I dream of making 1/285th scale minis of SF and odd real or prototype military vehicles like the MBT-70, Objekt 279, XM808, the AH-56 Cheyenne, ETC… Maybe someday…

Lion in the Stars14 Aug 2013 5:52 p.m. PST

Make them available in 1/100 scale and you have some sales to me, Art!

Angel Barracks15 Aug 2013 2:49 a.m. PST

That is how I make my vehicles.. I don't print at Shapeways though..
And because I don't print at shapeways i don't have to add detail later, it is all there on the printed master..

Covert Walrus17 Aug 2013 5:43 a.m. PST

Feximex – thanks for the advice, will try some Ethanol on them in future :)

Lion – Good point.

cfielitz04 Sep 2013 4:52 a.m. PST

Shapeways is awful when it comes to finding vendors.

fred oliver04 Sep 2013 8:13 a.m. PST

For my money (literally), products by Masters of Military are every bit as good as those by GHQ, without the somewhat exaggerated detail. They're also pricey and brittle, but that's a consequence of using the material (FUD) that offers the greatest detail. You'll find pictures at shapeways.com/shops/mom. Recent additions include a Rammtiger, Bergetiger, Flakpanther turrets, IS-7 heavy tank, Sherman BARV, Alecto SPG, Porsche Tiger, VK 3001 prototype heavy tank, and Radschlepper Ost. They're exquisite models, but – once again – not cheap. And I agree with cfielitz that Shapeways needs to make it possible to search by vendor.

Angel Barracks04 Sep 2013 8:31 a.m. PST
Covert Walrus04 Sep 2013 2:47 p.m. PST

cfielitz, that's one major failing of the site – the search is by individual items rather than shop.

Then again, I like to be presented with a variety when I browse through "Latest" products.
