Saw the TAG Tudors, but was even more wowed by their eastern armies. Don't know much about how to paint Russians, Cossacks, Albanians and Poles, but now I'm very interested! I was thinking that good intro to the period / location would be something by Wargames Research Group, but they might be outdated. I was thinking that Gush's 1420-1700 rules might be a nice overview altho I'm not intending to play those rules. Guidance appreciated, I'm planning to order my TAG Cossacks ASAP! perhaps Hungarians also

Rules wise, TAG offers the Father Tilly rule set, which has a supplement for the Eastern forces (ottomans, poles and Cossacks I think). If not that, By Fire and Sword, while designed for 15mm, would scale up nicely to 28mm, and offers a lot more detail on the forces of Eastern Europe and the Ottomans. For research/intro to the period, Osprey offers a host of quality titles on the different armies (the 2 titles for the Polish army are invaluable resources), and the Fire and Sword rule book has even more. Hope that helps! |

We've been playing Field of Glory: Renaissance for about two years now. Very enjoyable even though there is a fairly steep learning curve. A couple of times other rule sets have been tried (Pike and Shotte and at least one other), but as a group we come back to FoG:R. Currently the battles are about 1000 points and three players per side. |

The Piquet supplement "Anchor of Faith" includes army lists on Polish, Cossack, Muscovy, Ottomans and Persians. Also covered are Thirty Years War and the Wars of Religion. |

IIRC there is a Yahoo Group called Pan Mark and it deals with Eastern Renaissance gaming. You may find something of interest there. |

Did WRG do a Renaissance version of their "Armies of
" series? I have Armies of Imperial Rome, Dark Ages, Feudal Europe, Crusades, Medieval Armies, and they're all worth owning. |

There is a WRG book by George Gush,'Renaissance Armies, 1480-1650'. It is long OOP, but you can find it secondhand. I recall seeing some of the chapters online a few years back. |

Just checked and the Yahoo Group is still up and running. It is called PanMark Eastern Renaissance. As far as I can see it is not tied to any particular set of rules. Recent discussion has been about the new set called 'With Fire and Sword'. I haven't seen these rules but I gather they are specific to Eastern Europe e.g. Poles, Ottomans, Russians, Cossacks et al. WRG published 'From Pike to Shot 1665 to 1720' by Charles Grant but it is restricted to covering armies from Western Europe. |

Ignore my previous message, I was thinking of the Grant book. |

@ashill2 – system is called 'By Fire and Sword' ;) in main rulebook there are 6 armies – Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, Sweden, Muscovy, Turkish Empire, Crimean Tartars and Zaporozhian Cossacks. |

Any books that cover the history of the wars, especially the early Renaissance – as in 16th C.? |

I wouldn't suggest to use Gush as any point of historical reference, as his descriptions are full of errors and incorrect assumptions made by author. |

Found a copy of Ian Heath's "Armies of the Sixteenth Century" but it only includes the British Isles, the Spanish and Dutch. The forward implies a second or more volumes for continental and Easter Europe, but I didn't see any on Amazon except four volumes on Asia and the Americas. Strange – I'd have thought Europe would have more selling impetus than say, Aztecs or even Asia, given a book by Foundry Publishing. Any of the Osprey Titles particularly recommended? I find their website a bit of a nightmare to deal with. |

Nice site – While there's bound to be some inaccuracies in any article, it's hard to beat free as a place to start! Here's the entire index: link |

It sounds like most of "By Fire and Sword" provides lots of background on the Eastern armies and battle the second half of the 1600s. See the review at link Chris |
