I have Doom already, and enjoy it. From what I've seen online, the cards, figures, etc. from Gears of War and Doom look very similar, and IIRC, the same guy designed both games. Are they different enough to justify owning both?

If not, which is the better game?

I don't have Doom, but do have Gears of War. What I like about Gears is that the cards run the Locust AI, so it's co-op only (but quite easy to play solo).

Doom and Descent compare more directly.

Gears of War is pretty different in that it doesn't rely on a grid, instead, you have larger more abstract spaces to move around in, along with cover points.

I have Gears of War and it's a very good game, especially for co-op. Sadly it doesn't get that much play here since people are turned off by its license, despite it being a co-operative game.

Gears is a much better game, and as was pointed out, Doom is more Descent on Space. Gears is its own thing. I love the way movement zones and LoS rules interact naturally with the cover system – if you've played the games, it does a great job of translating the cover system elegantly into a board game.

If you haven't played the games, I'd still rate it above Doom any time.

I have Doom, Descent and GoW, and the latter one is by far my favorite. It has the nicest miniatures and a quick playing style that manages to stay true to the source material while also playing to the boardgame format's strengths. Due to the random map generation all scenarios can be replayed multiple times without things becoming stale.

Doom is o.k. as a pickup and play game, but the campaign system is rubbish, the Marines become too strong after the first or second mission in a row.

Descent is in my opinion the worst of the three, it takes too long to set up, too long to play, and as the Overlord player you kinda get frustrated because you won't have any chance to hurt the heroes much once they get their first special weapons, and then you are stuck spawning endless hordes of worthless monsters turn after turn for two hours… Meh. Your mileage may vary.

Are you speaking of 2nd Ed. Descent?

GOW miniatures on the DOOM floor/tiles would make for an excellent game (using any number of rule-systems…)
Both board-games felt too much like video-games for me, but both have some nice components.

Gracias to you all--it looks like GoW is going on my to-get list!
