Does anyone know where I can find details of shield designs etc for some Bretons I am painting for Saga.

Would they be similar to Normans?

Thanks

Here's what Little Big Man Studios has for Breton shield designs:

Who knows? Probably….

There is not much to go on for any shield designs in this period. More a selection of clues that may, or may not, be all that accurate.

It was a religious age so crosses may have been popular. Do what seems reasonable to you – nobody is going to show you concrete evidence that you are wrong!

Ah ah you are overestimating me! :-)

No I don't think there is any serious reference about it.

If you are asking about 9th century (round shields) there is a reference about chief Morvan boasting that his men have black shields.

If it's 11th century I would accept some Norman influence. The Bretons were slowly accepting feodalism then, and the new fashions probably came from the east: Normandy and France.

One of my friends included some anachronistic symbols (as the ermine, which only appeared in the arms of Brittany in the early 13th century) in his Breton troop, he knew it is not historical:

To be honest, their shields would not have been very different from the Normans.

Just Google 'Norman shields' in Images.
