I am a former subscriber to Wargames Illustrated (nice pictures but too biased to specific rules) and currently subscribe to Wargames, Soldiers and Strategy, Miniature Wargames (which I'll probably let lapse when my Battlegames' subscription finishes) and I've just subscribed to SOTCW Journal. I'm wondering if anyone can recommend any other current wargaming magazines apart from those listed above. I am interested in reading about historical wargaming from the horse and musket era to WWII. Articles like the recent ACW campaign in WSS Issue 66 are of particular interest to me (because it provided a structured campaign that can be translated to many different rules as actual troop numbers were provided): I don't even have an ACW force yet but have started one with just over 100 painted figures thus far.
One magazine that interests me is 'Line of Departure' (Wargaming Quarterly by Jim Werbaneth), see link – I'd especially appreciate any reviews on it.
Your reviews of historical wargaming magazines, based on personal experience, would be appreciated. |

I like Lone Warrior – The Solo Wargamer's association's magazine – you can read sample articles on their blog page link to see if it's your kind of thing. Campaigns are a frequent theme. None of the sample articles are horse & musket at the moment, but a new article goes up every month or so. Also really like Slingshot from the SOA – but as you may have guessed that's Ancients/Medievals. |

Thanks, Lone Warrior was the one I especially wanted reviews of but I referred to 'Line of Departure' by mistake (sorry to mention board wargaming on The MINIATURES Page but I was trying to do too much at once). |

Well, I've been buying it for about 25 years now, and have picked up earlier back issues whenever possible – so obviously I think it's great. That's my "decleration of bias". Have a look at the Table Of Contents back to 1995 link to see the range of topics covered. ACW has been a big part of the magazine in the last few years, but Lone Warrior covers all periods (including F/SF). It's a friendly magazine, everyone's just trying to play better games – and being mostly (but not only or exclusively) solo players the games can be very mainstream or very far off mainstream depending on the writer/gamer. There are regular complete rulesets, and these have typically been play-tested over many years to give a good game. I like it a lot, if I only got one magazine at all it would be LW. Won't suit everyone of course, we're all different. A great aspect is many members of the SWA write for Lone Warrior, so the reader gets a lot of different viewpoints. Some write more and more often than others, it's true, but you'd typically see 8 or more different contributors each issue. |

Oh, and a decision was made a couple of years back to move virtually all reviews and similar (show reports etc) onto the blog to keep them timely – so that lets the magazine be "all killer, no filler" . |
