A friend is interested in starting on the Japanese Army in 15mm primarily for Rapid Fire games.

Looking back it seems the most recommended models are Peter Pig, Command Decision and Eureka. Any other suggestions?

Also, do those 3 match up size wise as I suspect he will want some variety.

As always, thanks in advance.

Command Decision/Old Glory are the largest of the three and Peter Pig is noticeably smaller. I'm not sure about Eureka's infantry, but I have their Filipinos and they are fairly standard 15mm in size.

I was always partial to the Command Decision Japanese. Much nicer than the old Quality Castings. I've heard good things about Eureka, but I don't own any of their figures.

Battlefront are due to start bringing out their new figures this month for early flames of war. See the latest issue of Wargames Illustrated for more details.

I have Command Decision's Japanese, thay are nice figures, like the rest of CD's stuff. I also play Rapid Fire in 15mm. You've just given me the reminder that I need to paint these figures!

The Eureka are very nicely sculpted models, but their rifles and bayonets are exceptionally weedy and bend/break easily with any use at all. The OG/Command Decision Japanese look nice, too, but their rifles are WAY too short to be Arisakas and the casting leaves much to be desired. I have boght a bunch of them from Skytrex instead and they are some of the cleanest casts I have ever bought, albeit expensive as hell. Peter Pig's line is excellent, but smaller than the other two by far. Resistant Roosters makes a good looking line, but they are bigger than all the others, and even bigger than most of the Marines out there. They'll probably match the size and heft of the BF line when it comes out if the past is any indication.

Don't forget that your Japanese should be MUCH smaller than their opponents, if you are seeking to be historically accurate in your army. This would really show up in Pacific battles. Of course your army will look smaller but then that is an aspect that gives character to your army.
Some of the contributors here are very knowledgeable about such things and might be able to provide the relative average heights of Japanese and US troops. Of course you will also get contributors who know that the Japanese are equally tall or taller than US troops!

Good luck.

I have a shedload of the PP Japanese and they're great, especially the chaps manhandling the AT rifle.

:O)

Well…

average heights are debatable… even if it a different generations I have meet japanese in all sizes. The JSDF officers I know are quite tall, one of the former chief of the fleet was big. Today I almost bumped in a stunning Japanese girl that was well over 170cm… (probably she did not see me so small I am). The much shorter… I do not know.

I like PP Japanese anyway.

Don't forget that the average height of Japanese people may well have risen quite a lot since WW2 due to much better availability of food, and a somewhat different and more varied diet.

Animal protein, esp red meat and dairy = height, in one generation, no matter the race.

This is a one year bump, but does anyone have opinions between the Eureka and the Battlefront figures? I'm looking for IJA for a different sort of game, but haven't settled between the two. Eureka USA's castings look alright, though the hands are a little weird looking. Battlefronts aren't bad either, but it appears I have to buy an entire company at once (which might not necessarily feature all the guys I need in the right proportion).

I've got PP, Eureka and QRF Japanese & sizewise they're compatible IMHO. I've also got the Resistent Roosters ones and they're considerably bigger. They 'might' be suitable for Koreans fighting for the Japanese, who are often noted to be bigger individuals than the Janpanese themselves by memoirs of the time.

There will be platoon packs in the BF range, so 1/3 company at a time. They nominally follow actual 'T, O & E', but that tended to be only approximate in most Japanaese units anyway.

Cheomesh14 Jun 2014 4:34 p.m. PST

Which of the ones do you have are best quality?

JD Lee16 Jun 2014 6:25 a.m. PST

I have them all, best quality (least miss casts) is Peter Pig. The best quality and price is Command Decision.
