So, those who wish to force other people to play games with toys soldiers in an "acceptable way" are at it again. Out of some anal need to make TMP follow an obscure but dumb rule, they wish to eliminate the Empire Board. How does it harm you for it to continue? You can always turn it OFF and not even be aware of any rare topics that get started. STIFLE Empire! I play it about once or twice a year, and the GM does all the heavy lifting. I like the way it plays, if someone else does all the work. I will also be the first to admit that it is one of those clunky Old School "Add up a bunch of positive factors and subtract a bunch of negative factors and roll the dice" games. SO WHAT if all the cool new rules have passed it by? What's your problem with the existence of an Empire Board that you do not have to look at? Sheesh. Talk about shades of ritual purity. |
John the OFM | 02 Jul 2013 7:12 a.m. PST |
If you don't like it, play something else. But stop trying to prevent those who like it from discussing it on TMP. |

Horses for courses I think. I have no problem with the Empire board. |
79thPA | 02 Jul 2013 7:26 a.m. PST |
I haven't played the game in decades but I would play it again if the GM knew the rules. I don't see what the issue is; it's not like it takes up a lot of floor space. |
John Leahy | 02 Jul 2013 7:26 a.m. PST |
I doubt anyone cares. However, it falls into the concept of less boards overall. I think that is the goal. Thanks, John |

What are you blathering about? And why the cross-posting frenzy? (Though posting to the "Needs More Boobies" board did ensure I'd read it so perhaps there is method to your madness!) ;-) |

Thanks for the dig John. ;-) My problem with the board is that we, the membership, voted by a substantial margin NOT to have an Empire board, but it was created anyway. Once created it's basically failed and is a waste of bandwidth. As to the game, I played Empire 3 quite a lot. Empire 4 became a joke set of rules and Empire 5 was not an improvement. We have had boards merged before, Terrain and Scenics for example. My over all problem with the proliferation of boards is that I may miss something I want to read because it's mislabeled or posted. If it's in say the 18thC general discussion I can find something interesting on saw the AWI, which is not my main area of interest, that I may miss because I have to wade through another sub-board and I don't have time. |
Allen57 | 02 Jul 2013 7:30 a.m. PST |
I missed this one. If the issue is the number of boards it seems to me to be up to Bill. I have no idea how many boards (subcategories???) the TMP server can handle. If the issue is someones dislike of the game my less than polite comment is "stuff it". |
Der Alte Fritz | 02 Jul 2013 7:32 a.m. PST |
John: you are the one who is responsible for starting the Empire Board. You did it as a joke, not expecting the idea to turn into a reality. Tsk, tsk, tsk. |
John the OFM | 02 Jul 2013 7:38 a.m. PST |
y problem with the board is that we, the membership, voted by a substantial margin NOT to have an Empire board, but it was created anyway. Once created it's basically failed and is a waste of bandwidth. That is NOT what the Poll was about. The "Create a new Board" will always fail. The Polls are phrased :would you support such a Board?" with a minimum number necessary. If such a Poll is run, I would suggest that it be voted upon with the exact criteria. Fritz, I think it was the lamented Connard Sage, and not me. |

Gotta run. I have electricity to sell! See y'all when I get back later. |
chriskrum | 02 Jul 2013 7:50 a.m. PST |
There are too many boards. I'd favor culling a lot of them. Most games are simply not popular enough to warrant their own board and it be much nicer if the comments were consolidated under a single heading such as Napoleonic Wargaming, World War Two, American Civil War, etc. People can put the name of the game they're writing about in their subject heading. That's my two cents. |
miniMo | 02 Jul 2013 7:55 a.m. PST |
Also note that when the poll ran, the question did not specifically mention any particular game, author, or period. This board is great for bringing together fans of all the Empire games ^,^ |
Seamus | 02 Jul 2013 7:55 a.m. PST |
Personally, I'd say nuts to all of this and go back to Usenet. But people like their shiny graphics, so rec.games.miniatures.historical & rec.games.miniatures.misc are deserted. |

If the Board meets the number of minimum posts to continue then it should go on. If I do not care about a Board I will turn it off but that does not give me the right to stop other members from using that Board if thy want to. |
ancientsgamer | 02 Jul 2013 8:26 a.m. PST |
Waste of storage for Bill but hardly a waste of bandwidth. After all, the only thing you get by it being there is a small notice of a message on that board. If you choose not to read the thread, then you don't have bandwidth issues ;-) As far as the voting goes, well, this isn't a democracy and if enough voted for it, why not? I don't play a number of games. Far be it from me to keep others from discussing it on their own board. Frankly, having a board for something you don't play makes a lot of sense; it doesn't clog up the board you prefer to peruse as an example. It I didn't play FOW, I would love it that a board existed for it as it would free up the WWII land board (I happen to like FOW for what it is btw) If you stop and think about it, more boards equals less clutter in the main boards. Less boards means that the few boards there are cluttered with whatever passing fancy is popular now. And Mapleleaf has the best answer so far
. PS, I miss Connard Sage and the other gentleman who shall remain nameless. But decorum needs to prevail or we will end up like so many other nasty boards out there. |

I figured it passed the minimum number of supporters, so it deserved its chance. Since then posting dwindled below the specified minimum, so I figure it deserves to be purged. No hatred, because I have no dog in the fight (I only game Napoleonic naval or skirmish myself) |

Fewer boards is the excuse when one doesn't like a particular set of rules. It's like stifling, the subject keeps resurrecting at the full of the moon. |

If no one posts (because the board has failed) then how does it use up bandwidth? I happily missed the thread that started this one but it seems that the majority of the "haters" of rule sets do so because of something they heard from their cousin's, brother-in-law, plumber friend. Some have never played or haven't played for so long they only cling to the negative. It dominated Napoleonic gaming for a time so must have had some positive elements. For those who gave up years ago perhaps they should try it again with a new group. The personality of gaming has changed in the last 20 years so maybe it would seem fresh now. |

I've played games using Empire. I'd play them now. But I'm not going to start collecting napoleonics again. |
War Artisan | 02 Jul 2013 11:45 a.m. PST |
Because people got tired of beating on FOW? Some things NEVER get old ;) Now, Elliott, that's not very nice. A crack like that could get you another hundred stifles, if every FOW player on TMP hadn't already stifled you. I suspect FOW players the world over have joined TMP just for the pleasure of stifling you, never to return again. As for "Empire hatred" . . . while I am pretty much indifferent to the existence of the board (since I can navigate around it easily enough) I hold a grudge against the game itself because it drove my entire gaming club out of playing Napoleonics for five years back in the early 1990s. It took me that long to convince them that not every Napoleonic ruleset would send them home frustrated, with a killer headache. |
darthfozzywig | 02 Jul 2013 12:46 p.m. PST |
Why are some folks starting lots of threads now that it's already fallen below the threshold to maintain the board? Obviously not because of interest in the rules. Post count? |
vtsaogames | 02 Jul 2013 1:05 p.m. PST |
I have no beef against the Empire board. I would prefer there be less boards in general but that's because once a thread drops off the front page I have trouble ever finding it again. Chalk it up to bad TMP searching and ADD. |

(Though posting to the "Needs More Boobies" board did ensure I'd read That's how he got my attention! Try owning a Russian army, and playing Empire. Now that's crazy talk! All Empire players only own French Armies! the subject keeps resurrecting at the full of the moon. But that is still several days away
Because people got tired of beating on FOW? Well duh!!!!! they haven't rereleased anything lately, so they are bored. I suspect FOW players the world over have joined TMP just for the pleasure of stifling you, never to return again. who told?????????? What's everyone got against the bad guys in Star Wars anyway? Emperor Palpatine is an Ancestor of Napoleon for starters! Empire is a bad word in both instances for two. I could go on, but now I'm bored, and am off to bash Games Workshop. |

ochoin ceithir | 02 Jul 2013 6:57 p.m. PST |
I gamed using the Empire rules once. I even read the rulebook. Not for me but the other guys playing them had a ball. So, yes, why stymie the pleasure of others? Leave the board alone. |
21eRegt | 02 Jul 2013 8:16 p.m. PST |
I painted up the 2nd Army of the West for 1812 and have never lost with it, though lots of very bloody draws. Austrians were my favorite after French, but the French preference has nothing to do with the rules. Besides, the British are way bigger killers. Try a British on Russian game some time! |

Using [tags] in titles is your friend. I don't see it done here on TMP, and it really makes sorting your favorite topics a lot easier in a general forum. |
Martin Rapier | 03 Jul 2013 8:12 a.m. PST |
"Fewer boards is the excuse when one doesn't like a particular set of rules" Nope, it is the excuse when you don't like lots of boards. Like me. Lots of boards just mean that many topics vanish into obscurity the second they drop off the front page, as you can't find them again. If we could order the front page by last updated rather than first posted, this problem would be mitigated. But we can't. As Seamus says, tags are the way to go. |
