Greetings; Giving over to my current X-Wing obsession, have a lot of extra generic ships that I would rather use with another rules system. Looking for a good rules set with construction rules rather than attached to it's own background (like Silent Death). About a half-dozen to a dozen ships aside, with possible rules for larger combatants (corvettes, frigates, transports, etc.). Seen the buzz for 5150: FC, but am not familiar with THW's system, though it looks interesting at first glance. Any other suggestions appreciated. Thanks, CW |

FT full thrust is a classic |

Silent Death has construction rules, and works well enough for generic use outside of its setting – there was an official Star Wars variant ages ago, and fan-based ones tackling BSG and Bab5 at one point as well. Brigade has Squadron Commander 3600 as a free download, which is always worth a look. star-ranger.com/SC3600.htm Jon "Full Thrust" Tuffley also has Tacship, a simple set of fighter combat rules (with construction system) that was originally published in Ragnarok and available as a freebie on their site: sfsfw.org/a/03/tacship.php |

Silent Death or Full Thrust
I'm not clear yet what the new THW game might do better than those. |

CLR, many thanks for the suggestions and to those that recommended 5150 and others, will do some digging on that and Battlestations as well. WM9, VERY familiar with FT, but that is definitely a bigger scaled game than what I am after (looking for mainly tactical fighter combat with the occasional larger ship or two thrown in). |

Just use the standard FT design system and call each mass point 100kg or 1000kg. Just use fixed-forward weapons for the most part. Use the base rules for capital ships. I suppose you could use Jovian Chronicles, though I recommend building a spreadsheet to design vehicles. |

Biggest edges would be the campaign rules and solo play aspects of the game. So would the THW fighter game be a good one for a BSG campaign of limited resources
a big ship on the run that can't afford to lose fighters or guns on the main ship? Or something like Yamato/Starblazers (though that wasn't so much about fighters)? What to use for a larger scale campaign of battles in far distant sectors
an ongoing war? |

@Space Wizard, here you have a BATREP of FC with fighters and capital ships: link There are no specific rules for a campaign of one big ship with limited resources in FC although you could probably make it work, but there is a good and solid campaign system that allows you to play many different linked battles. Anyway, there is in the works a supplement specifically for what you want, it will be probably called Carrier Commander. |

Ah, that sounds promising! |

Maybe – the current rules have a more RPG feel to them, tracking the advancement of a star pilot and his squadron mates, though. Carrier Commander will probably be better suited, sounds closer to what you're after. What to use for a larger scale campaign of battles in far distant sectors
an ongoing war? Maybe Victory By Any Means? It's a pretty generic campaign rule set, albeit rather abstract. Decent way to generate scenarios for tabletop battles. |

How so? I would say the point you seem to make, and the one I would underscore, is design the fighters AS ships, just small ones, and corvettes and the like, actually small ships, pushed up to capital size. You could even use Kra'vak hyper-maneuverability for the fighters, just to add flavor. Not necessarily a first choice, but if you are familiar with FT anyway
But, I'm a fanboy. Doug |
