I have to say I like the glossy look on the exoskeleton. Have you considered just putting a matt finish on the weapons, drones and any cloth or material? I prefer a matt look myself but there is something about these. |
Hamilton | 21 Jun 2013 1:41 p.m. PST |
I've had that suggestion from the Gruntz forum too – I'm going to try one with matte on the gear and leaving the exo gloss. |
WarrenAbox | 21 Jun 2013 1:51 p.m. PST |
Interesting. I've only ever dullcoated my figures, and then glossed a few select items to make them shine. Never occurred to me to do the reverse. Can you get brush on dullcoat? |
Hamilton | 21 Jun 2013 2:00 p.m. PST |
I have a bottle of Army Painter Anti-Shine that I haven't used, so I'm going to try that. |
Rebel Minis | 21 Jun 2013 2:05 p.m. PST |
Very nice! I matte coated my red ones but then did some spot gloss

I love it! I want to steal this idea! I like the "ant" look! |
Mako11 | 21 Jun 2013 9:17 p.m. PST |
Yes, you can get brush on Dullcoat, called just that. Check better hobby, and/or model railroading stores. The latter may be more likely to stock it. |

Wow!!! I'm going to be stealing some ideas. Do the Manth!!! Dan |

I second the suggestion! Dullcoat the weapons and keep the shiny exo-skeltons! It was the first thing that leaped at me when I saw your fotos: "Way cool! Look at those glistening exo-skeletons! How'd he do that?" You might even want to do a tutorial. You seem to have serendipitously created a great technique! I'd certainly be interested in it. |

I would like to see a tutorial as well.. |

Really nothing new going on. Primed them black, then spray coat of brick red. Did their eyes with a few layers from orange to yellow. Guns, packs, etc. Then I dipped them in Minwax walnut gloss, added another highlight to the eyes and guns, flocked the bases. |

I'm also working on a gunsled for the ants built on the weapons from a dollar store robot/mech.

Nice gunsled. What a neat conversion! |

I second BlackWidowPilot's question. A gunsled like that will get me to buying some Manth. I might just buy some anyway. I'm almost done with my Earth Force and Kurgen. I really admire your painting. Very inspirational. |

It was from a Dollar General I believe. Toy aisle endcap. |

Hamilton, Wow. Nice!!! At first glance it reminded me of Bionicle feet and shields. But yours looks way better. Thanks, Dan TMP link |

|
Rebel Minis | 01 Jul 2013 6:41 a.m. PST |
now that is pretty cool.. I'll swing by after work to see what they got. Thanks! |
TheBeast | 01 Jul 2013 8:24 a.m. PST |
I hate looking at that sheild-to-sled, and think 'obvious'. If so damn obvious, why didn't I think of it? I HAVE seen those before
As for the guys, I know you're putting up a brave face, but we can see you're embarrassed by them. No problem; you ship them to me immediately, and we won't speak of them again. Preferable priority, if not express. Doug |

Manth force is now complete. I took the advice I got here and elsewhere and left the Manth carapaces shiny while dulling equipment, etc.
Here's the commander. I gave him a bigger gun and a commo pack.
A closeup of an engineer. The drone is the head from a HaloClix Marine :)
A heavy plasma support gun. The gun and base are from SFB hex stands.
The recent posts on the hexbug larva made me seek these guys out. I got a nice deal on a lot of 4 on ebay.
Sniper team – just extended the barrel.
Gunsled painted up, components mentioned previously.
I have a bunch of Mechwarrior stuff, now happily ready to be repurposed for 15mm! I chose 3 Locust mechs for my Manth force.
Supposed to be a pic of the command team and the heavy vehicles, but the command team came out pretty blurry.
Finally, an image of the 4 squads, their specialists, and their rides!
This has been a great way to break into 15mm – easy painting and really nice minis – kudos to Rebel Minis. My oldest daughter and two nephews have been busy painting up some Rebel EF droptroopers, and my middle daughter is working on a robot army made of Risk battledroids and some Shalur, so we hope to have some games this weekend! |
