Hello, picked up a box of the Perrys Desert Rats the other day; reading the little insert sheet thing it advised that a truck or lorry (bedford or morris, maybe austin?) would be required to complete the platoon.

But where would I get one from? I think warlord do a bedford, but I dont know if its the right one, but are there any other suppliers I should look at?

thanks!

The classic Bedford 15cwt can be got from Company B, try this link: link .. as well as a lot of goodies!

Yep the Company B Morris 15cwt is the perfect platoon 15 hundredweight. (It's worth noting this wasn't the platoon's transport though – it carried a chunk of their kit to lighten the load while the troops walked, so wouldn't be used in action – you definitely don't need one for your platoon in a wargame.) Warlord's Bedford OY is too big for a "leg" infantry platoon's platoon truck, but two of them would be suitable for a lorry-carried motor platoon. (There were also truck-carried motor platoons, who had 3 or 4 15cwt trucks instead of two lorries.)

Isn't 'truck' just the American translation of 'lorry'?

You'd think so, but in British WWII parlance, no…. The War Office designated it as a "truck" if it was less than 1 tonne capacity, while larger was a "lorry."

Lorries are big, trucks are small (smaller than lorries anyway).

I have occasionally used platoon/company transport in games, partly to give the players something else to think/worry about.

Force of Arms does a short-wheel based Bedford OX, which could be used as a "make-do" platoon vehicle.

If you are in the UK (or anywhere else this side of the Pond) you can get the Company B Morris 15cwt from my shop here in the UK, and I also stock Force of Arms.

Thanks bob, found your site just before you posted when I went a-googling for a uk supplier!

unfortunatly I spotted that youve got the Aussie Sentinal tank; always rather like that tank, didnt think anyone would have made a model of it, can I justify it in North Africa? And do you stock the version with the twin 25pdr Howitz…no,no, that would be just silly…

Go on, you know you want one……..

Just noticed a 2pdr Portee Morris at TWCP. Do you sell the canvas tilt kit to add a bit of variety?

Anyway, can the Ford F30 be used as platoon transport, again for the sake of variety, or was this purely in the hands of the LRDG?

Yes, I have the seperate tilt here:

Platoon trucks were almost always 15cwt, while lorried motor platoons normally had a pair of 3 tonners, so the F30 as a 1 1/2 tonner is unlikely, falling between the two stools as it were. It was by no means exclusively LRDG, but I wouldn't expect it as an infantry transport.
