I'm planning a 19thC Bughunt (predictably entitled 'Steamship Troopers') and was thinking of having swarms of little critters organized as units. Big scaries will be their own card as per rules.

Any experience or advice pro or con?

I have used Yetis rampaging against the 7th Cavalry.
They were mentally controlled by a Cheyenne shaman. To keep control, he had to pass a "sustain" roll. Likewise, if he lost control, he would have to make a "start" roll.
As long as the shaman maintained mind control, they did his will.
I limited the mob to 4 yetis.
If he LOST control… Let's just say that the GM made some amusing rulings.

The basic GASLIGHT mechanics can work here with little change.
Heck, you can even use magic with this.

OK, so I will be crafting some 'brain bugs' then…

You need to decide what level of intelligence they have, and whether they will follow a "commander" bug just like a leader of a normal unit. And whether they will need to test morale or be immune to Morale checks.
You can also consider expanding the unit size from the standard 10, to 20 critters if you want large swarms.

In my fantasy campaigns, 'beastmasters' had to have a musical instrument- pipes, whistle, fiddle, bullroarer- to control their charges. That might still work at VSF levels. SF would have implants worked by an ipad…
