What do different folks do to differentiate platoons of infantry?
Spots on backside of base
Do the base in a different color
Some subtle item on base (like a rock)
Something else?

I use to go the subtle route but more and more I find the distinction needs to be more prominent. Guess my eyes are getting weaker. These days I paint the back edge of the base in single color. I use black for HQ, then red, white, and blue for the line platoons.

I number my platoons.

I paint a small rectangle on the back of each base with each platoon being a different colour. Vehicles are easier as I can use realistic insignia on them.

Bases for my Russian infantry mob… different flock patterns and colors.

I paint different coloured stripes on back of platoon base.

Like ThomasHobbes, I use different paint colors.

My 1st ID assault company uses olive green with red stripes (divisional colors) for the Boat Sections, Rangers have a bright blue, and my arty has red. Just across the back of the base, the other three sides are painted to match the base or board.

Tank platoons are simple, since they're 3 DDs and 3 regular tanks (well, one Sherman dozer and two Shermans that should be pulling trailers…)

I used to do coloured dots on the underside of bases. I'm moving to putting various numbers and colours of stripes on the back of the bases.

I have various methods.

i) differentiate by hat (cap, helmet, mixed cap/helmets). Works better for those nationalities who sometimes wore caps in combat.

ii) differentiate by pose e.g. all the prone bren gunners are in platoon A, all the grenade throwing figures are in platoon B etc.

iii) the obvious stuff with markers, colour coded bases etc.

I usually use a similar layout for all bases in each platoon- left and right figures in the back, center figures towards the front,; the opposite; leftmost figure back, the next front, the next back, the next front; the opposite; etc. I also use the similar poses idea as above.

Different colored grass tufts.

Insidious I know ;)

I use a rectangle on the back of the stand. Each army has a different color rectangle, but follow a simple scheme.
