Hello all,
I am currently putting together some of the PSC 15mm Stug IIIs…love the little things! My question is whether or not schurzen would have be retrofitted or added in the field for the ausf f8? I am planning on using the Battlegroup rules and they have f8s in the Kursk book and the Overlord one and would like to use my stugs for both. Any thoughts?
Thanks
Mike

Pz III and IVs were so Stugs probably would have been too

I don't think I've ever seen an F-8 with skirt armor. But I went and researched it…

So by March 1943, it was ordered that all StuGs then in production would be fitted with skirt armor, and vehicles in overhaul would be retrofitted. In Spielberger's book on the Sturmgeschuetz, p. 79, there is a photo of an F with skirt armor.

I've never seen a photo of an F/8 with schurzen, but Wiki says they were: link

Side skirts were retro-fitted to some Ausf. F/8 models, as they were to be fitted to all front line StuGs and other tanks by June 1943 in preparation for the battle of Kursk. Mountings for side skirts proved inadequate, many were lost in the field.
Granted it's Wiki, but I've generally found Wiki to be pretty reliable when it comes to dry facts. It only starts to get sketchy when discussing controversial issues.

At any rate, I'd have no problem playing against F/8s with schurzen at Kursk.

Garand posted while I was still typing. :)

I have seen them with G style skirts.

Thanks everybody!
Perhaps some F/8s may be misidentified as early Gs due to the obscuring of its hull because of the schurzen or camera angle?

Garand15 Jun 2013 2:53 p.m. PST

The photo in the Spielberger book lacks a commander's cupola, so pretty safe it's a F… :)

MGs and gun-shields were retrofitted as well, correct?

Garand15 Jun 2013 7:09 p.m. PST

Yes, that is correct. They would have been retrofitted early '43 according to Spielberger, so doubtful if any vehicles in panzer grey would have this feature (or skirt armor for that matter -- they probably would have been re-painted during the overhaul).

Thanks again!

No I have seen F & F8 with skirts. Also, don't forget there was an hybrid F8/G with cupola and roof extractor.
