what colour were they? , were they painted black?.something must have been done to the surdace other wise they would rust up quite quickly?.and the submarine type boats as well. I have done a bit of googling and looked at posts here but nothing seem to be definitive.

There isn't a definitive answer. Some were definitely painted black. Others were left bare and did indeed develop a rust colour. Many were launched in a hurry and into action and had a short life so didn't have time to rust!

From the pictures I have seen rusty black seems common

I've seen some photos that suggest they were painted a light gray or white in Southern waters.

The "ironclads" group on yahoo groups had a PDF of US ironclad colours. City Class, Passaic monitors etc.

That PDF is super- I have a wooden boat project on the go for the last decade of a Confederate blockade runner- one day it will get finished.
