I've looked around and couldn't find a place here where gamers could discuss such topics. I'm sure some will say that it belongs in the Fantasy section, but, to me, "fantasy" includes such worlds as D&D, Warhammer 40k, and the rest, with magic, spells, dragons, etc. Alternate history has always appealed to me, specifically the world of Harry Turtledove's Southern Victory series. I'm also interested in the setting laid out by author Robert Harris and his book Fatherland, and also the old FASA game Crimson Skies. So, what say ye? |

In an alternate universe, people still read Turtledove. OK, I didn't say that Turtledove was Dostoevsky, but he does present the gamer with an interesting premise to play around with. Good comeback, though. I think alternate history is handled already by the Pulp, Wierd War II, and VSF Boards Yeah, but pulp, Weird War II, and VSF also have elements of "fantastic" contraptions and inventions. Examples I'm thinking of are Commando Cody's rocket backpack, Dream Pod 9's world of Gear Krieg and their armored walkers, and the realm of Space:1889. The examples I mentioned initially have none of those, but only a point of divergence in time that takes their stories to a different path from our reality. |

I did an alternative history campaign for Knights & Knaves in which the Viking settlements in North America had been more successful followed by Welsh settlements so that rather than perish the Lancastrians escaped to North America following the Wars of the Roses and established a New Britain. They clash with Aztecs, Vikings and Spanish as well as Native Americans. Base on my short story A Knight of the New World. So alternative history can cover a broad range. Thomas J.
