After a lot of bad weather, they have finally & successfully raised a Do-17 from the English Channel.

Makes me wonder how many other planes are out there.

After seeing the wreck, I really wonder about the "restoration" they are going to do. There is very little left to restore, so what they are really doing is making a replica built around what few surviving bits are left.

Yea…building a full scale model from scratch might have been easier than this.

I don't believe they plan to restore it. Instead, they intend to preserve it and put it on display without restoration.

One look at the pictures and it is in pretty bad shape.

Its in considerably better shape than many aircraft I've seen that have been restored.

EDIT – they will be conducting a full restoration at the RAF Museum's site at Cosford.

Does look in bad shape, but the experts can work miracles.

DM,

From the RAF Museum website stabilisation and conservation seems to be the intent.

From a structural point of view I'm astounded that they managed to recover so much in one piece without the support frame.

When I heard they had to change plan I feared the worst ..

It's in far better condition than I had feared. I'm surprised how much is left. Once the marine growth is cleaned off it will look a lot different. Given it is the only known example left I'm glad they have managed it.

There is lots of stuff in the sea, I'm sure. At the Southampton Hall of Aviation they've got the remains of a Stuka that was shot down over the Solent, for example.

I wish them luck, the photos looked awful.

Well enough of the Naysaying. Can we each donate a bottle or 7 of Fairy Power Spray, advise taking off the Flash, then personally I would use Chaos Black, a bit of Feldgrau and a wash of devlan mud
