I've just win a Revell 1/1200 scale model of the Roma on Ebay. I would really like to try to paint the red & white stripes on the foredeck and am trying to work out the best way to approach this. I am obviously going to have to mask off the stripes, but am not too sure the best way to do this. I have a very basic idea in my head, but it's really not at a stage I could explain it just yet. It's more like an "idea of an idea". Has anyone painted this scheme successfully? I would really appreciate every scrap of advice and guidance that can be given to me on this one. |

Vallejo and other companies like W&N and Humbrol produce a liquid "mask" that you can paint over and then peal away. |

Tamiya makes masking tape for model painting too, in many widths. |

Wise words – Tamiya's ultra-narrow masking tape is probably the way forward. Liquid mask isn't any real help for this sort of job, as if you can paint that in a straight enough line, well, you can paint the stripes

Yes, wise words indeed! I tried using liquid mask before and it's really not too good at straight lines. The thing I can't figure out is how to keep the stripes exactly parallel. I'm sure there's an easy way to position the masking tape to keep things nice and straight, but I must be honest and admit it has me beat at the moment..? :-( |

Tamiya's masking tape is low tack, and easy to reposition, by trial and error. |

Or, you could align them strip to strip, and then remove alternate ones. |

After figuring the width of each stripe, use a pencil to make small marks on the edge of the deck. These will help in laying down your tape. |
