…and not any mention of the Invasion of France in my hometown newspaper, The Wisconsin State Journal out of Madison.

Pathetic.

Sorry, my bad. There is one sentence in the "Today in History" section, in tiny type among the "Births" and "Legal Notices" sections. You have to be looking for it to find it.

Typical. Sad but hardly a surprise.

Did they make any note of May 10th? That was the other invasion of France, and Wisconsin does have a large ethnic German population. I'm kidding.

I grew up near LaCrosse, and as a kid I remember D-Day being wrapped in with Memorial Day. Does Madison normally have a D-Day remembrance?

It's not the only one….one year back in the Mid-1990s' the El Paso Times completely forgot to mention Dec 7th…It drew all sorts of flak….and someone wrote, "If they had forgot to mention Cinco De Mayo, there would be hell to pay!"….

They ran a full page apology next day, and made sure NOT to forget again, (as far as I know..)

Civilians…humph.

A front page article and two full pages of coverage of local D-Day vets in the front section of the Philadelphia Inquirer. Some still remember.

Rrobbyrobot06 Jun 2013 10:14 a.m. PST

Let's invade Madison, WI. They'll never forget again.

@Sajiro, If they did have a D-Day Remembrance, they don't anymore.

@Murphy, the same here in Madison. In fact, there was a fairly big Cinco de Mayo article in the paper about it last month.

@Rrobbyrobot…I wish somebody would; knock some sense into some of the idiots around these parts.

Could anyone born after 2000 even find France on a map?

We must never forget these men's sacrifice.

You're surprised by the oversight in the second most Liberal city in the country?

I'd be surprised if they didn't run an article on how we only invaded Europe to steal all the resources!!

Fact is – folks just aren't that interested any more. In time it will pass into obscurity. I'm ambivalent about it really.

It's good to remember the sacrifice of those who died, were wounded or survived unhurt but still gave up their time and endured suffering to defeat Nazi Germany – but as fewer and fewer remain alive it will lose its impact.

On the other hand – it all gets used to further militarism and drum up support for modern wars that are far less clear cut than that one (and I contend only) 'good' war.

All soldiers [USMC and others who prefer a different 'title' inc] still deserve recognition, respect and reward for their service even if in peacetime or in some war that is downright illegal and immoral. It's not their choice who and why they fight – especially at first.

I would not have the courage and toughness to succeed in the military. Most people don't IMO.
