I was wondering what everyone uses to base terrain on. I have used vinyl floor tiles which seem to warp when glue is put on the (is that the glue shrinking and bowing them), peg board and cardboard.
Need something light and that won't warp.

I generally don't base terrain such as buildings. When I do base anything, I usually use mount board.

1/8th inch MDF, painted both sides (if you only paint/glue one side it will warp) works perfectly for me. I guess it would partly depend on the scale and size of terrain piece you're working with though too (1/8th inch might be too high of a lip for your liking, though I personally carve the edges off on an angle with a box cutter to make a smooth(er) transition).

I use a 2 mm thick vinyl floor covering which has a "waffle" underside. See photos for original material and other links for end results. Very, very cheap, no warping and will take paint, glue and flocking.

I have game mats made from the same material.

I swear by 1/8"/3mm MDF. like Rorschach i bevel the edges with a belt sander, and then I cover the entire thing in sand. it is then painted and flocked.

all my terrain is based like that. you can see some examples HERE

3mm mdf. I coat each side with cheap polyurethane before I start building them up.

3mm or 5mm Plastic card – the sort that FOR SALE signs are made from. You can pick this up from many different sources, my favourite is sign makers, who in my case give me their off-cuts for free.

What items of terrain can you fit on a 1" poker chip?

What Tony said.

I used to order big sheets of 3mm bextrene sheet (essentially styrene) from a film company. I've now just about run out so I need to find another source.

@Major Bumsore: poker chips are rather nice for some of the smaller scatter terrain options such as a few barrels, ammuniion dumps, trees, and things of that sort.
