Ok, so I'm slowly collecting some air support for my vietnam games. I have 3 Skyraiders, 2 Intruders, and two Corsair IIs. I'm looking for early F4s, A4s, and F100s. I know there's an F4E kit, but that has the longer nose than F4Bs. It's correctable, but I'd rather avoid the work in the first place. The challenge is that I haven't seen a single 1/100 scale early A4 Skyhawk (removing the spine is more work than I want to do!), nor have I seen any 1/100 scale Super Sabers. Anyone have leads for the Skyhawk or Super Sabers? |

auction Can't tell if it is an A-4C or an early no-hump A-4E from the picture though. |

LitS, The Super Sabre is hard to find. The only plastic models out there are one by Revell, and one by Takara. I suspect that the Revell model is the same mold as the Takara one. The Takara model was originally released as a tie-in for the old Area 88 anime series. They do turn up on eBay occasionally, and prices can range from 15-75$. There are some 1/100 diecasts, but they can be pricey too. There is one diecast that turns up out of Poland, but it is the bare metal and multi-color Stateside markings. It is also a C model not a D: auction My question for you is: Where did you find 1/100 scale Skyraiders? Are you using the Model Power diecast (which are actually 1/110)? Dave Schmid over at Armaments in Miniature is talking about producing some more Vietnam aircraft. The Super Sabre and Skyraider are on that list, I think. BWW |

Brian – "Armour Collection" did a nice diecast Skyraider in proper 1/100. They were bought up by Franklin Mint a few years back, and I think it's been reissued a couple of times since. |

The Revell Super Sabre does exist and it is a very nice little model. I had one, but gave it away a couple of years ago, sorry. |

Does anyone know of a 1/100 F8F Bearcat to be used as French Indochina aircraft? |

Tamiya make a bunch of these, but can't recall which models, for sure. |

@Brian: Model Power diecasts for the Spads. I'm going to repaint two of them, one Navy and one Marines. Going to be silly with the Navy one and arm it with one 'codename Sani-flush'. Thanks for the link to the Polish supplier, looks like I can get a couple F4Cs and F100Cs from them. I can't find any references showing visible external differences between F4Cs and F4Bs, so that's fine. *wikidive* Looks like quite a difference between F100C and D models, though. Much bigger tail and longer wings. I'd love to get an F100F 'Misty' fast FAC, too. |

Does anyone know of a 1/100 F8F Bearcat to be used as French Indochina aircraft? Yes I've got one somewhere. It is an Atlas one from a French magazine part work. Do you want it? You can email me on ae_res at yahoo dot com and we can work something out. |

I can't find any references showing visible external differences between F4Cs and F4Bs The only one I can think of without diving into my reference books again, is that the F-4C has thicker main wheels so there's a bulge at the top of the wing near the fuselage, directly above the main landing gear bay. Of all the US variants the B and N versions are the only one with the thinner main wheels, the USAF went with the thick wheels on all their Phantoms, and the USN/USMC used the same thick wheels too on the J and S versions. |

Fred, if you don't get a taker, I'm interested in the Beercat

LitS, From what I've read, the Marine contingent in Vietnam was all jet-powered. 65-67 is A-4 Skyhawk and F-4 Phantoms. In 1967 a couple of squadrons of A-6As show up, but they are pretty rapidly sent on missions up North due to their advanced capabilities. They don't start doing CAS again until the bombing halt. You might get more mileage out of your second A-1 by painting it in VNAF colors instead. It's a pretty easy conversion, as they flew them in the US Navy scheme of grey/white for some time, just with VNAF markings. There is even a website that has VNAF decals free for download: link FWIW, there is an article in the TooFat Lardies Summer Special that deals with CAS in Vietnam, with aircraft availability broken down by year and Corps areas. Full disclosure though: I am the author of the article, so I might be a little biased as to how good it is. :-) BWW |

@Mako11: Tamiya makes a 1/100 F4EJ, A6A and A7A. Still need an F100D and a short-nose F4B/C. @Brian: Outstanding! I'll have to chase that down. TFL's Summer Special 2013? |

LitS, Oh, I'm sorry; yes it is the TFL Summer Special 2013. It also has a good article in there on weather in Vietnam, broken down by Corps and operational area. I didn't write that one though. BWW |
