I'd like to know if there are any good Cold War bomber books, or fiction novels out there, and if so, which you suggest?

Of course, on-line info on the subject, for reference would be appreciated as well.

Interested in the 1950's – 1980's, for the USA, UK, and Soviets point(s) of view, plans, tactics, etc.

I'm especially interested in the switch to the low level attacks, once the Soviets got their air defense network act together.

Thoughts?

I'd say that Red Storm Rising and John Coyle's Team Yankee and follow-on books are probably your best bet. They're not totally bomber-centric, but RSR contains a good description of Soviet bomber attacks.
Larry Bond also wrote some pretty good ones, with one (AFAIR) set in Africa, and several set against Korea. There are also the Dale Brown "Dreamland" books, and Firefox.

Dale Brown's first book 'Flight of the Old Dog' about a heavily modified B-52, is a Cold War bomber classic. The B-52 was sent on a 'suicide mission' to take out a laser deep in Soviet territory. It is to strategic bombers what 'The Hunt for Red October' is to submarines.

Dale Brown was a former FB-111 bombardier-navigator. His first three or four books (FOTOD, Silver Tower and Day of the Cheetah) were all excellent. Unfortunately, his later novels (including the 'Dreamland' series) were not nearly as good.

The Penetrators. IIRC the authors name was Gray or Grey. In an attempt to prove the worth of manned bombers an RAF officer leads an unauthorized mock raid on Washington in a Avro Vulcan bomber.

Flight of the Intruder. Not a heavy bomber story but tells the story of an Navy A6 crew attacking targets in Vietnam.

Team Yankee, mentioned above, did not deal with the air war though there is a scene of a bomber raid against an airbase.

Hullo Russia, Goodbye England is a novel about a Vulcan pilot during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Red Alert (which is where much of the serious plot points of Dr. Strangelove comes from), a second endorsement for The Penetrators and Fail Safe.

Seven Days in May

I think The Penetrators was excellent. I read it many years ago but the story and the flight action has stayed with me. The book came out when the manned bomber vs ICBM controversy was at its height. (for those of us who are old enought to remember it.)And of course, Flight of the Old Dog.

All of Dale Browns early books are worth reading IMO. Night of the Hawk is fantastic!!

Oh yes, Seven Days in May as Joe Fish mentioned. It's got B-36's making a surprise raid on the US East coast as a secret drill to test readiness.

Flight of the Old Dog

Thud Ridge

Flight of the Intruder

Fail Safe is a particularly interesting read, with all the defensive weapons on the bombers.

Both Firefox and Firefox Down! are also good reads.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Interested in any more, if there are others.

As an interesting coincidence, there's a "Fail Safe" board game due out soon, and a couple of other Cold War, strategic bomber games that have just been recently released as well.
