A remake of the old Steve Reeves version of The Thief of Bagdad. Sometimes called The Blue Rose.

charared03 Jun 2013 4:54 p.m. PST

John Brown's Raid on Harpers Ferry

I'll second that Bobgnar!

Lotsa a good story stuff there.

also…

Field of the Cloth of Gold… OUTSIZED characters, over the top pageantry wif plenty of bling!

Perhaps an early/mid 1930's drama based on Smedley Butler's views of the possibility of an American coup d' etat v. Roosevelt. (Kinda like Seven Days in May… BUT with a much more volitable, angry US population!).

Lots MORE I can think of, but like OFM, I doubt anything other than $$$ hokum (historically speaking that is) will make it to the "big" screen.

floating white bear03 Jun 2013 4:58 p.m. PST

Operation Tidal Wave, 160+ B-24s at Ploesti. (Hollywood will probably make it 500!)Rob.

A sequel to Master and Commander would be good, and/or a movie about the various naval engagements of the new, United States Navy.

A proper movie on Blackbeard, and/or the pirates of the island nation of the Bahamas. A sequel, on the men who put down piracy in the Caribbean, and fought against it.

I'd like to suggest one that might have actual potential to turn a profit:
Eureka Stockade.

Cmde Perry03 Jun 2013 8:08 p.m. PST

Another vote for more Aubrey movies,

Dune, done right,

Knight's Castle, by Edward Eager – maybe a good candidate for Pixar

Hannibal the Carthaginian General, played by a new and unknown actor, with Jessica Alba as a Spanish or Carthaginian princess. Use the Italian production company that produced HBO's "Rome," but with a larger budget. A mini-series of about 6 – 12 episodes would be even better than a feature film.

The multi-racial composition of the Carthaginian army and key characters could play well to audiences world-wide.

Most battles can only be a scene in a movie.
Movies are about PEOPLE.

That's why I like the idea of Harpers Ferry. The lead up about the characters and the atmosphere could be done very well. The the movie got you cheering for the raiders, then had the battle, loss and then just ended, I think it would leave you hanging with this sense of "Aw, man … but … what about? … isn't there … some? … but … why not?".

Mako11:
"Dambusters", for a start. They've threatened to make/screen this, but it's yet to make an appearance in the USA, though it may have been completed.

Not yet. Peter Jackson is doing it, but put it on hold to do The Hobbit. They supposedly already built ten full-size Lancasters.

zippyfusenet04 Jun 2013 11:01 a.m. PST

Thank you floating white bear. I guess 160 B-24s will have to do.

Flashman for sure.

Consider Phlebas – Iain M Banks…

John got in there first with 'Quartered Safe Out Here'. Fraser was a screenwriter, so I wouldn't be a bit surprised if he had already screenwritten it before his death.

Superb casting of Hugh Laurie as Captain Grief, by the way! :)

How about a movie about a guy who collects, paints and games with miniatures, however no matter how many he collects he is never satisfied.

Will Smith to star and Michael Bay to produce/ direct. Lots of explosions.

britishlinescarlet205 Jun 2013 11:58 a.m. PST

Silmarillion (72 hour epic please)
Lensman Series – EE Doc Smith
The Saga of Pliocene Exile – Julian May
Dune series
The Rama series

People wanting the Elric series need to buy the Hawkwind "Chronicle of the Blacksword" DVD (if you enjoy space rock anyway :-) ).

I'd like to see a real good adaption of the Dark Tower books

Actually, pretty much any half decent sci-fi series as long as it is produced with love and care and not made to satisfy the lowest common denominator.

Monitor and the

… sorry. I live there.

flooglestreet05 Jun 2013 8:44 p.m. PST

The Insidious Dr. Fu Manchu, following the book rather closely. The Fu Manchu character was properly portrayed on the screen in Drums of Fu Manchu, a Republic serial. The Christopher Lee films are not worth watching. Also, I woulds like to argue against a remake of Forbidden Planet. They got it very right the first time. I would also second the Lensman films, if they do credit to Doc Smith.

For a war picture I'd like to see a film about the Armada.

Ancient: Herakles & Iolaus where they're actually portrayed as lovers.

Medieval: The Norman Hautevilles in Italy and Sicily: Roger, Robert & his wife Sikelgaita.

Early Modern: film adaptation of the Broadway musical Cyrano (sadly, Christopher Plummer is now too old to reprise the lead role, drat)

Science Fiction -- Mara Jade, The Emperor's Hand.

Dasher21 Mar 2014 9:55 p.m. PST

Stephen Pressfield's "Gates of Fire".
"300" was all right as a "juvenile", but utterly bereft of historical or characterization merit.
"Gates of Fire" is just freaking brilliant.
Also, "Cathedral", by Nelson DeMille, before Liam Neeson is too old to play Brian Flynn.

The LRDG featured in an old black and white movie, 'Sea of Sand', but a modern take on the subject might be worthwhile.

Id like to see something that accurately depicts and exposes to the masses in this country the reality of conflict on the colonial Australian frontier. The nearest approach to that ideal to date was Rolf De Heers's 'The Tracker'. The only movie that's tackled the subject head-on is the old black and white Ealing production, 'Bitter Springs', but it's representation of the historical situation is highly sanitised and strangely whimsical.

Henry Martini27 Mar 2014 7:26 p.m. PST

Correction: …. , but its representation….'

Tequila Mockingbird.

A gentleman southern lawyer yearns to be a flask-juggling cocktail barman in the fleshpots of New Orleans. To assist his rise to fame, he comes up with an unusual recipe; but first he must overcome prejudice and bigotry from those who refuse to accept that cocktails can contain animal parts.

Altius28 Mar 2014 12:54 p.m. PST

A movie about the Mexican-American War told from the good guy (aka Mexican) POV. The defense of Monterrey might be a good focus, or Chapultapec. Some of the smaller victories out west might be nice, but I would really prefer the sweeping grandeur of a bigger batte instead of a guerrilla action.

For those who moan about Hollywood innaccuracy – they have to convey the whole thing in 100 minutes (Battle of the Bulge was still unforgivable), and has said before it has to be about people.

There is definitely a mini series about 'XX committee' in WW2, lots of larger than life characters and suspense.

Anybody proposing a not that famous battle NO NO 1000 TIMES NO. I probably wouldn't watch your personal fantasy battle movie, because it would be boring and unwatchable.

I would like to see a movie about Daniel Morgan and Cowpens….Tom Berringer could play Morgan….not sure who could be "Bloody Ban" though.

Winston Smith09 Jul 2014 10:13 p.m. PST

Who would be the romantic interest in "Cowpens?"
Jennifer Lawrence? I'm in.
