A old fan of Rat Patrol. Watching a little tonight but can't watch the whole thing in one sitting. Kind of nice watching a movie and understanding the language. |

It looks great. All the kit looks like the real deal too! I saw the first five minutes and will watch the whole thing tomorrow. Thanks very much, Ammianus! |

"leads a patrol on a raid to destroy a German fuel dump located deep behind enemy lines. " link As I understand it, the LRDG was a recconnaissance organisation and did not directly engage in such raids. That was more the province of the SAS. |

The LRDG called these "Beat-Ups" and they were considered good for morale. They were more common before the SAS built up strength. Barce and Murzuk are examples of the lengths they could go to. |

"As I understand it, the LRDG was a recconnaissance organisation and did not directly engage in such raids." As a much younger gamer and reader in the 60s & 70s, I read a lot about the N. Africa theater. I built some models and even went so far as to write to one of the more popular model companies suggesting that they produce a model of the Chevy truck used by the force. I received a very nice letter in reply saying that they did not have plans to do so but included several really nice, glossy catalogs of all their products. Anyway
The desert group did mostly recon work but did some raid/attack work as well. I believe one of their "hobbies" was to raid camps, bases, airfields, etc. in a hit and run fashion. The idea was to cause casualties and damage as well as to cause fear and confusion behind the lines. Not near strong enough to take and hold an objective, they simply would shoot n' scoot as they say nowadays. |
