Hi Folks

I appreciate eveyone's feedback over the week on my webpage. I gave the dip a try. I actually brushed it. The results are amazing. I will have to experiment with lighting the color to compensate for the darker finish. Any thoughts on that?

Thanks Again

Just a note, but if you decide to add a matte finish like Dullcote to the models it tends to lighten the colors and the contrast a little.

I dip all the time (actually brush but you know what I mean) using Army Painter Strong Tone. If it comes out too dark a quick highlight can fix it but matt varnish first as this tends to lighten the figures a little so no highlighting needed. I know some people paint a shade lighter before dipping but using AP Strong Tone Tone I haven't felt the need. This is for 15mm and 28mm.
I panicked once and highlighted the dipped figures. When matt varnished they were far too bright.
Yours look great so I wouldn't bother.

Nice, I have recently, about a year go switch to the Army Painter method. Before that is used to black undercoat and dry brush everything.

I think the AP system is great, I can now paint much faster and still get a good wargames level of painting. They are not going to win any prizes but they still look good on the table.

I agree that they can look dark when the initial AP is put on but they do lighten up once Matt varnished.

Nice – I liked the effect. I wish Old Glory made Spanish in 25/28mm.

Great finish Dave they came out brilliant.
If you go 1 stage further and block in the full face before brushing on the dip then highlight with the same flesh colour you should get a subtle 3 shade face similar to the style you were looking for in your earlier post as the AP takes the base flesh back a shade (same with the uniforms).
Cheers

paulalba – I will give that a try on the next batch

They look super HandL – Spanish Militia must be like buses – no pictures for ages and then two lots at once! I've just posted some pictures of the bare figures with some other makers for comparison on my blog.

I thinking of just using different greys and browns for the smocks they are wearing – what evidence do you have for the other colours?

HandLCreator03 Jun 2013 9:16 p.m. PST

Littlearmies, I just use whatever color I want. Spanish Militia would have any avaliable clothing possible. A poor country, poorly supplied and what uniforms they did get, I am sure probably quickly faded and turned to rags.
