Counter attacks designed to restore the front line seem to have been fairly common. How would you write objective for the attacker in such a scenario? An objective like "No enemy troops behind a line connecting A,B and C" would work, but is at risk of being abused where one stand is an inch over the line. In that case, the attacker realistically did restore the front, but would lose according to the written objective. |

You should have some key terrain features that need to be captured so that the enemy penetration is unsustainable. |

I think that "Control 2 of 3 key terrain features" is a good start |

Alternately you might want to whup the enemy so bad they have to stop to re-group; for example, "destroy or disorder X number of enemy units" |

It more about hitting the enemy when they are spent, have wounded and misplaced, low on ammo, food and water, and don't have a strong defense set. You can really do a lot of damage with a well done counter attack. for Gaming start with 2 equal forces and do some damage to all the units that just attacked and half the counter attackers and maybe some extra things for the just attacked about bad set up.

Pictors & Saber- Good point, the front line is really a series of strong-points rather than a single imaginary line. |

A good start is alway to NOT tell the player that it is a "counterattack"! Just tell them it is a "frontalattack of a moving enemy off balance". Demand utter defead/ wipe out the enemy. So you get a much more historical result of someone trying hard. Greetings |

I would use- retake wood/village/hill/crosroads etc.(Delete as required) Some easily identified feature. And use some common sense if anyone claimed they'd done it and there were still enemy stands near to it. |

Howdy, I think the best way would be to arrange the scenario so that the counter attack is a "in-the-flow" part of the game. Ponder on, JAS |

Yes, common sense goes a long way in determining 'victory'. It depends really if it is a limited counterattack to restore the front line or something more grandiose. If the former, then how about 1. restore the integrity of the front line 2. failing that, contain any further enemy advances 3. avoid the loss of more than x units for the defender (assuming a degree of disorganisaton and disarray). 1. dig in and hold your current position (or 'defend Hill 123' or whatever). 2. reorganise and rally subunits (where appropriate) 3. re-supply units with ammunition or something like that. |
