I am struggling in trying to find a good paint that is an appropriate match for the dark green used by the Japanese Navy on their aricraft. An old model color reference guide I have says to use FS34092, and when cross referenced to Vallejo paints is suggested as Gunship Green, but this doesn't look right to me – not enough blue in it. What are others using for this color? Thanks, Terry |

I just use Vallejo Military Green, but I think I have used several different green shades on different groups of a/c. You could try Extra Dark Green, but that is probably too dark. Don't forget what with the sun and the salt spray, the color would fade and depending on the dye lot it could take a number of hues. |

Look for these: White Ensign Colourcoat paints. Modelers use them and they are considered very good. Note the spelling. FWIW, the paint you are referencing in your post is a Testor's product and should still be available. |

I use Tamiya XF-13 IJA Green, though with an airbrush. |

Hello Terry, If you are painting a Zero from after about May 1943 (when the factory applied dark-green upper-surface camo was adopted) I would suggest the use any of the following for either a Mitsubishi or Nakajima built A6M: Mitsubishi Upper Surface D-1 Midori-iro (FS 4052) -Model Master Marine Corps Green (2025 – enamel) -Polly Scale Italian Dark Olive Green 2 (5296) -Tamiya IJA Green (XF-13) -Gunze IJN Green (H-59) Nakajima Upper Surface D-1 Midori-iro (FS 4077) -Model Master Imperial Japanese Navy Green (2116 – enamel) -Tamiya IJN Green (XF-11) Note that these paint values are for a full scale aircraft so you may want to whiten them for a proper scale effect. Thank you all for the help. I am looking for an acrylic paint as that is what I use but will check into getting some of the enamels if need be to do a paint swatch and then try to match to greens I have or can get. Polly S made one called IJN green and IJA Green, the former a nice deep green with a tuch of blue, but still very green, and the latter a nice olive green. But I don't think they are made any more. Thanks again, Terry |

Polly "S" paints has an IJN and an IJA green. The IJN is very dark, while the IJA is a "leafy" green. I do not know if they are still in production, but I can still get them at mo local hobby shop. |
