Being, as it is, I am a Bad General, I'm having some trouble understanding the rules. Is an army commander -- the senior joe -- running his junior commanders, or is he just another bloke running around trying to get units moving?

Say you have a division commander and two brigadiers -- is he rolling for command of them ("attack the ridge"), then they boot their units into action?

Am I missing something? How have you sen this handled?

The commander is just another guy that wants to move guys around.

He does not need to give order to sub-ordinate commanders.

The difference is that he does not have his own troops so he can command any and any combination.

So brigade A commander can only command troops from brigade A.

Same with Brigade B commander.

The over all general could command troops from Brigade A or B or two units from each or both of them together if they met the other requirements for orders.

Pictors is correct.

We use a house rule where the overall commander can make a command roll and pass his actions to sub-commanders in 24" as command re-rolls. But he has to decide this at the start of the turn. Either he is pushing troops or passing re-rolls, not both. He also has to allocate the re-rolls to sub-commanders before they roll.
