So, in my usual quest for a new era about which I know little, I've recently developed an interest in the armies of my childhood (born in W. Berlin in '66).

I'm looking to try to game a confrontation in Germany in the '70s, though the exact dates rely upon what information I can find (in my usual madness, I "need" to find enough perfectly detailed information to be able field the exact forces available anywhere from the North Sea to the Adriatic and anytime from 1950-1990 . . . mwahahahah).

Turning back to reality, I'm having better luck with post-1980 info on the Warsaw Pact, though I've found a few great original "know your enemy" type of books from the 60s and one from the late 70s. A unit breakdown and equipment overview for the US/NATO forces any earlier than the mid-'80s is something which seems to elude me – everything I'm finding is much later (such as the Challenger II supplements) or at way too high a level.

So, anybody got any recommendations? I'm more than happy to plow through a thick book as well as a rules-set or supplement, and I read German and French as well. The stuff I've found so far is:

Weber, Wolfgang. Die Streitkraefte der NATO auf dem Territorium der BRD. 1984

Kopenhagen, Wilfried, Hans Mehl, and Knut Schaefer. Die NVA: Land-, Luft, und Seestreitkraefte (nice overview of the development of the East German armed forces)

Wiener, Friedrich and William J. Lewis. The Warsaw Pact Armies. 1977

Isby, David. Weapons and Tactics of the Soviet Army. 1981.

I have Otto Pivka "Armies of Europe Today" (Osprey, 1974). It is fairly useful for the early part of the era you're interested in – if you can get hold of it.

Bauermeister, I'd be very interested in an English-language distillation of the NVA's TO&E.

The 1970s is one of those dark and mysterious places when it comes to TO&E and OB info. I have spent years looking into it and it is still a lot of guesswork in many cases.

It depends what level of game you are interested in really, personally I tend towards the grand tactical/operational.

SPIs old 'Central Front' series was published in 1980-81 so is actually pretty good for the operational aspects of the late 1970s.

The TO&Es yahoo group has some decent (if patchy) stuff.

I woiuld normally recommend Isby and Kamps' "Armies of the Central Front", but at the price these people want
link
maybe not. Get your local library to order a copy.

All the best,
