No, they did not wear kilts. |
John the OFM | 27 May 2013 7:56 p.m. PST |
The kilts that they did not wear were probably in the Government Sett. |

I know the answer. 75th. What do I win? :-) |
Disco Joe | 28 May 2013 11:03 a.m. PST |
The answer is these are not the kilts you are looking for. Move along. |

Some of 76th. Macdonald's Highlanders were wearing kilts at Yorktown. 74th. Campbells wore government tartan and bright yellow facings. |

Oi! Bob! Enough of that. Just because SOME Jocks wore trousers and other didn't convert as quickly
I'm doing my 76th in overalls. One battalion of the 42nd shall be in proper kilted goodness for the early war, my other and the 71st shall be in some form of overalls/breeches. Now, let's all have a nice glass of claret, and move along

My 76th have overalls like all Highlanders SHOULD! :-) If yours do not have good legs, I can understand why you would want to cover them up. |
Supercilius Maximus | 18 Jul 2013 2:14 a.m. PST |
At least one company of the 76th is known to have worn overalls, as they served as mounted infantry in the South. Not a clever thing to do in a kilt

Not bad leggings; shame about the facings! |

Andygamer, you should be spanked! The Monks, yet! Some of my sources have the 76th. wearing trews. You can make a couple of pair out of a belted plaid, so probably a campaign expedient. Doesn't mention the tartan, but some less authoritative claim Macdonell of Glengarry. The 42nd. wore white trousers during their service in Newfoundland and Nova Scotia, but that may have been only working dress. Don't forget that there were three battalions of the 71st., although most of one sailed into Boston after the British evacuation and were captured/converted! So, there could be more than one order of dress conceivably. The next year's issue of tartan kilts were used to clothe the North Carolina Highlanders and the Queen's Rangers highland company. Government tartan, of course. |
