So, The colour of trousers of the FFL at camerone? Red? White? Or red for officers and white for rank and file? Greetings and thanks for the help.. |

Yes, both red & white were worn, but red was more "official." My Legion in Mexico officers wear red trousers, and so do most -- but not all -- of their men. Here's a handy reference link: PDF link And if you'd like to see a lot of miniature Legionnaires in action in Mexico, you might enjoy visiting my blog at: cameroneday.blogspot.com/?m=0 |

According to one of the survivors (Maine) the legion wore white trousers at Camerone. |

I believe most reliable sources favor the non-regulation white trousers that were worn in Africa. Probably both ORs and officers. But I like my officers in red, for contrast. The reconstruction in Military Illustrated link shows white trousers tucked into white gaiters. The white trousers apparently do not have the leather band at the bottom of the trousers which the red trousers have. Although some of the illustrations in Mad Guru's link contradict this. For some reason, most of the recent illustrations of the battle show the men wearing red trousers. And Edouard Detaille's wonderful, evocative drawing erroneously shows them wearing their greatcoats. So I'd say: Go with whatever you think looks most legendary! |
