Flying Frog A touch of Evil flyingfrog.net/atouchofevil is a board game (with some miniatures) of gothic horror set in the age of tricornes -what is sometimes called Lacepulp link / 18th C. Pulp link

The game link seems to enjoy rather favorable comments link. Yet a weakness of several board games is that 'it may be difficult to find them as exciting as it was during the first "fresh" play through': one cannot really replay them many times. link and this point was not addressed in the critics I read. 8 expansions are published so far link but it is not unknown that, like in the CCG market, 'cheesy' expansions / booster packs are intended to make the material already bought quasi-obsolete?

not a thread about Orson's best movie then…

Boardgamegeek is a useful source of general info, but their reviews tend to be overcritical to the point of absurdity, and the community is heavily biased towards abstract "Eurogames" over any kind of conflict simulation. Take anything they say with a grain of salt, and be aware that they have nearly as many trolls feeding deliberate disinformation into the system as (say) wiki does.

That said, I've played Touch of Evil a fair number of times, although only a couple of the many expansions. The core game has decent replay value and is an entertaining few hours in either competitive or co-op mode, and the expansions I've seen added to that nicely without extending play time overmuch (unlike Arkham Horror, for ex, which goes from slow to glacial with too many expansions). It isn't one of those games you'll want to play every week until the components wear out (that would be Seven Wonders) but odds are you'll find yourself opting to play it every month or two for years if you have a copy on the shelf.

So, good, but not amazing. Far better than the meeple-kissing pundits at BGG make it out to be, though.

I've played the game a fair amount with my friends and every game has been different and loads of fun. I think it has a LOT of replay value, especially with the add-on supplements as Rich said.

I concur with Rick and Nazrat. It's a fun game. I play about twice a year. Only added the Something Wicked supplement; but it still gives a good game. I have a preference for the cooperative; but that's just the group…

Charleton Heston was really oddly cast in the movie…..

Space Monkey24 May 2013 10:37 a.m. PST

Orson was forced to use Heston by the folks backing the film. IIRC.

It's an adventure game, which means you don't strategize much, jut enjoy the ride. If you can enjoy such a game (like me) and like the setting (which I think is quite unique in the midst of zombie and ctulhu games), you will surely enjoy the game.

I enjoy the game, and it is quicker than Arkham Horror. Mind, I've only played it about 5 times, so if the game gets repetitious after a dozen or more replays, I'm not at that point. My host has all the map expansions plus some of the smaller ones. Although we've played with all maps at once, I prefer just adding one map to the basic one: getting around the full board can be a real problem. The coastal map expansion is interesting, and the villains are really tough so adding that to a basic game that is getting stale should make the game fresh again.

I like it. I don't play it a lot, but once a month or so. Add a star if you like "Sleepy Hollow." I love the map art.

The shots of Janet Leigh in profile were heart breaking.
