I've completed a unit of Tirailleurs Sénégalais (1898) for Colonial Adventures and need to make one of the figures a sergeant. I've spent sometime time trawling the web but can't find any conclusive information on the size, colour and postioning of, what I presume would be, stripes. Any help in pointing me in the right direction would be appreciated.

According to the Osprey book on the French Army 1914-18,they wore chevrons on their cuffs. Privates (soldats) had one yellow stripe, corporals, two. Sergeants had chevrons in the regimental button color, which was yellow for tirailleurs, one for sergeants and two for sergeant-majors. So how do you tell a sergeant from a private? It doesn't say, but I'd guess (based on the 1870-71 Ospreys) that sergeants actually got gold chevrons rather than true yellow.

The sergeant might also have a long service stripe on his upper arm. This was a diagonal stripe, sloping down from back to front, and worn on both arms.

Whilst looking for something else, I came across this picture, which confirms the cuff chevrons if the guy in the middle is indeed a Sergeant.
