What do people think of the previous volumes in this history of the 29th? Should I buy them and start at the beginning?

For me, I'm going to read this then see if I want to read the others.
They may even turn up free at some point.

doubt they will be free, His other ones have much great circulation. Joe Balkoski is THE foremost 29th Inf Div/ Normandy historian. His stuff is good. Very good. If you have not read it then you should stay abed ashamed or some such. double so if you do not know him before this.

Joe litteraly gre up next door to many high ranking 29th officers and has spent ages and ages going over every scrap of information and records on the unit, and fitting it into place with his veterans interviews. BE=esides, his first jobs were designing wargames for SPI.

If you buy just one book of his, make it Beyond the Beach Head- the first one.
