It is an excellent book which looks at the Dura finds in the context of wider Roman equipment of the time. At that price it is a must. Roy |

Many years ago I worked for a man who had a concept he called 'back pocket money'. That was an amount that you carried with you that you could spend without thinking. At £40.00 GBP this is not expensive, but it is not a bargain. At £10.00 GBP it is a really worthwhile book with a good description of the siege and discussion of the armour that was found. A tenner is only three pints of beer, one ans d a half packets of cigarettes, or a cinema ticket. So it is well worth it if you are interested in the Late Roman army
I paid full price a few years ago and felt it worthwhile. Roy |

"A tenner is only three pints of beer" The international language of true value! And it will take longer to read the book. |

so that's at least 4 sales of an obscure archeological report off the back of one TMP post. Maybe Oxbow should be hit up for a subscriber! Mine just arrived today, and its immense – a coffee table sized book with colour plates as well as the line drawings I was expecting. (Amazon still has it on offer at over 30 pounds) |

Keraunos – its not an obscure volume, on the contrary, it is a standard reference work on for warfare in the 3rd century. Unfortunately, the site of Dura has suffered very badly from looting and stray shells in the recent violence. |

by definition, archeological reports are obscure. |

Gattamalata Thanks for the tipoff. My copy arrived today. A great book and great value for that price. I don't think it is as 'obscure' as some archaeological books are, and I've seen quite a few of them when I was at Uni and after. And it has influenced me to seek out other titles. I don't think anyone will be disappointed, as long as they remember it is not really intended as an Opsrey Campaign or uniform type of book – but it is full of information and for that price, you just can't go wrong. |
