It is an excellent book which looks at the Dura finds in the context of wider Roman equipment of the time. At that price it is a must.

Excellent price its currently on Amazon for anywhere between 25 to 80 pounds sterling.

Get it while you can.

I'm taking Mr. Boss's advise and buy this Book!

Khusrau24 May 2013 8:10 a.m. PST

already got it.. (well, check the screen name… ;) great resource, though probably a bit technical for the casual wargamer.

Many years ago I worked for a man who had a concept he called 'back pocket money'. That was an amount that you carried with you that you could spend without thinking. At £40.00 GBP this is not expensive, but it is not a bargain. At £10.00 GBP it is a really worthwhile book with a good description of the siege and discussion of the armour that was found. A tenner is only three pints of beer, one ans d a half packets of cigarettes, or a cinema ticket.
So it is well worth it if you are interested in the Late Roman army… I paid full price a few years ago and felt it worthwhile.

"A tenner is only three pints of beer"

The international language of true value!

And it will take longer to read the book.

so that's at least 4 sales of an obscure archeological report off the back of one TMP post.

Maybe Oxbow should be hit up for a subscriber!

Mine just arrived today, and its immense – a coffee table sized book with colour plates as well as the line drawings I was expecting.

(Amazon still has it on offer at over 30 pounds)

Thanks for the 'heads up.' Just ordered a copy too!

Got mine today. Its a whopper right enough.

Keraunos – its not an obscure volume, on the contrary, it is a standard reference work on for warfare in the 3rd century.

Unfortunately, the site of Dura has suffered very badly from looting and stray shells in the recent violence.

Keraunos04 Jun 2013 5:03 a.m. PST

by definition, archeological reports are obscure.

Thanks for the tipoff. My copy arrived today. A great book and great value for that price.

I don't think it is as 'obscure' as some archaeological books are, and I've seen quite a few of them when I was at Uni and after. And it has influenced me to seek out other titles.

I don't think anyone will be disappointed, as long as they remember it is not really intended as an Opsrey Campaign or uniform type of book – but it is full of information and for that price, you just can't go wrong.
