"Of the sixteen vessels of 118 guns type Sane-Borda which starts between 1786 and 1813, eleven will be under the Empire. Among them was the Montebello, his construction began at Toulon in October 1810 and was launched on December 6th, 1812. His name, including the three-decker was the only representative in the history of the French Navy, and is probably a tribute to Marshal Jean Lannes, Duke of Montebello (tittle from the Battle of Montebello delivered on June 9th, 1800) a good friend of the Emperor Napoleon, who was mortally wounded during the Battle of Essling May 22nd, 1809 (he died a few days later, May 31st).

Although the same type as the 118 guns built from 1786, the Montebello, and all the vessels built after 1808, has a slight difference from the original plan. Width of 50 feet is indeed raised to 50 feet 6 inches. The origin of this change was finding in 1808 when redesigning the 16/24e the ocean than the width of the ship was increased by 6 inches.

The main dimensions of Montebello are in the following principle:
- Total length of perpendicular angles, 196 feet 6 inches or about 63.86 meters
- Width in the middle outside members, 50 feet 6 inches or 16.41 meters,
- Hollow keel to the top line with the main beam, 25 feet or 8.12 meters
- Move to 5 feet battery 5098 barrels.

The weapons of the Montebello is also different from that of the first three bridges of this type. The original armament consists of 118 guns of them, 32 guns were of 36" pounds as the low battery, 34 guns were of 24" point to the second battery, 34 guns were of 12" at the high battery, 18 guns were of 8" to the lads, and 6 howitzers of 36" on the poop (a total of 124 guns so). It is actually worth remembering here that, paradoxically, a 118 guns ship had actually more than 118 guns…"
