When and where were these used? I got a pack of FV432s from GHQ, and four are of the normal variety, but the fifth has the turret. I'm fielding a 7th Armoured Brigade force circa 1985; did the 3rd Battalion (Royal Sussex) of The Queen's Regiment use them in 1985?

You are one lucky SOB i thought they(GHQ) stopped making that variant …..Mikey

In some Bns all 432s in the Rifle Coys would have them or about 50/50,

Tally Ho!

When I was in the TA, the stated issue was 2 per platoon, with the intention of increasing this as production allowed; if Nick is right presumably it eventually did.

All the best,

John.

in the 1980's the establishment for Mech Inf Battalions had 2 per platoon / 6 per company.

I read these were Used by Berlin Brigade aka "the hostages in-being".

Trying to find the reference, it might have been anecdotal from a from a former Squaddie.

mwnciboo,

I think you're thinking of the FV-432/30 with the Fox turret mounting the 30mm Rarden cannon. The Peake Engineering turret was a small, enclosed GPMG turret. Yes, the FV-432/30s were used in the Berlin Brigade, with four going to each of the three infantry battalions there. They were used variously as APCs or fire support vehicles. Each battalion also had about a platoon's worth of ordinary FV-432s.

Ah I see, I made a mental leap there. I've never seen a 432 with a 30mm Rarden…So were the Fox turrets utilised when the Foxes were decommissioned? Or were just additional Turrets bought and bolted on a 432?

Jemima Fawr30 Aug 2013 4:09 p.m. PST

They were a failed experiment – I think they were built new in the factory, but I'm not sure about that. Only 13 were ever built, with 12 of them going to the Berlin Bde. To squeeze the turret on they had to fit a spacer ring, thus increasing the height and there was no room for power traverse. The troop capacity was also significantly reduced.

You had 432's in your TA Bn? Jeez we only got to use them on individual attachment to the Regs….
