Interesting thread here, a not very well known theme of the French-Mexican War. "Here it is a summary of work for 14 officers of infantry or cavalry against the Mexican-guerrilla in Mexico (1862-1867). This list is not exhaustive and it is welcome to complete. This irregular bodies varied in its composition and its staff during its five years of existence, but its mission has always remained the same: to fight the enemy on their own ground, with his own weapons and not hesitating to use the same means as them. The goal was not to make a clean war but to be effective. The cons-guerrilla were in March 1863, composed of 70 infantry and 80 cavalry men. In June 1864, it includes two squadrons of cavalry (260 riders), two infantry companies (290 men), 1 artillery section divided in two sections and an ambulance. These band was composed in its infancy by adventurers of all nationalities since there were up to 22 different nationalities: French, Greek, Spanish, Mexican, American, from North and South, English, Piedmont, Neapolitan, Dutch, Swiss, etc
quickly attracted soldiers released their obligations and the best elements of the French army love this life of adventurer. The officers were not left behind. Most were from African troops whatsoever for infantry (2nd and 3rd Zouaves) as well as for the cavalry (1st and 3rd Regiment of Chasseurs d'Afrique) troops who fought in allot the theaters of operations in 1850-1860. Some like Du Pin or Galliffet are exceptional officers whose atypical among the show's most emblematic of our military history." Armand, The Contra Guerilla was a Mexican Unit? Later it was part of the mexican imperial army. I thought they were never on the payroll of the french and never part of the french army? As they fought mostly in remote areas were they not even under French command? I am no expert, but I know that Maximillian even thought of disbanding them as he did not like their commander
Anyway.. I have painted them

Dear Rudi, the contra-guerrilla wore uniforms and they were under payment of the French Army. It wasn't a Mexican unit, it was a French unit, irregular, but under the Imperial French Army orders. The officers at charge of the contra-guerilla were mostly Europeans under French uniform (more or less) and salary. Maximillian don't like them, but they were the only ones who can managed with the Mexican guerrilleros in their own way of battle. And they were very effective in their performance. Savages, but with results. Amicalement Armand |
