I have some torn up door mats made from cocoa fibers, but the color is a bit dark. Has anyone found a way to recolor such material to a nice golden color?

I can't speak from personal experience, but it sounds to me like a situation where an airbrush would be very useful. Maybe spray some matte sealant on afterward for protection.

Do you think spray paint would work?

If I were going to use a spray can, I'd want to be pretty careful to make sure that the paint didn't go on too thick and clog everything up. Holding the can farther away, or making fast passes can be a good approach. Anything to give you more control, to make sure that it doesn't all happen too fast. Better to make more passes, each of which deposits less paint, than to do it all at once.

Dunk it some sort of dye? How are you mounting this stuff?

Spray or try some drybrushing.

I'd try drybrushing before I sprayed.

Augustus,

It is still mounted on the dark rubber it came on.
