and the weight of shot itself was different, there being no standardised pound measure across the different countries.

So British 9pdr is virtually the same as French 8pdr. That's what difference in pound weights would suggest. People usually get this bit right, but go off the rails when they suggest that Austrian weights were much lighter than the British ones.
