Last night I finished basing my Ptolemaic elephant Corp for Raphia (largely painted by my friend Nick Speller). There's rather more about them, on my blog:- link Cheers, Simon |

Now that's a formidable looking sight! Although I guess the Asian elephants of the Seleucids did not feel the same way
.. In all likelihood, their historical counterparts must not have been painted so nicely, otherwise those Asian elephants would have treated them with far more respect. |

In our test games, elephants have generally inflicted more casualties on their own side, than on the enemy! Simon |

Q. What did the grape say when the elephant stood on it? A. Nothing, it just let out a little wine! An awesome sight on the table top. Raglan |

Hi Raglan, I've incorporated a bit of your gyppo monument, from the Hypaspists! Cheers, Simon |

I thought I recognised that bit of scenery, wish I could remember where I bought it – those pieces would come in useful for my NKE. Raglan |

@ Lord Raglan Q. What's the difference between an elephant and a grape? A. One's grey and one's green. Q. What did Hannibal say when he saw the elephants coming of the hill? A. Here come the grapes, He was colour blind! |

Simon They do look good en masse. Aventine make excellent elephants, getting some of their armoured ones to flesh out the herd. I have a stand or 2 of Cretans to paint (various Essex 28mm) and like the use of monumental debris. When we played Raphia under Hail Caesar the African nellies held up well even though a melee dice down all the time against their Indian opponents. Maybe we need to tweek HC to make it harder for them to charge? Garry |

Thanks Garry, I have lots of Aventine armoured nellies to paint, for my projected Seleucid force. Hopefully in the Autumn, although I keep saying that; there is so little time! I'm using my own rules, in which the Africans are reluctant to charge, and weaker in melee, too. On the upside, though, they are equally proficient to the Indians at trampling their friends when they rout. ;-) Cheers, Simon |

Fantastic stuff. Suggest you play that Disney tune "in a military style" as they lumber across the battlefield! |
