Does anyone have one of the gameboards from Games Workshop? If so, would you recommend it?

Thanks

Qaulity is pretty good. Price is pretty bad and the skulls are a little too much (but can be covered up).

So if you are ok with the price and you don't mind the skulls or are willing to just cover them up I would recommend it to you.

I love mine. I got the set of 6 and one expansion pack so far. The skulls are no big deal, you'll always be putting terrain on it so they are easily covered up. Alternately you can just put water putty in them prior to painting.

I have used them for most of the games I've played for the last 4 years now. They travel well, they are practically indestructible, they provide an interesting and easy to set up battle field.

Looking at the cost per game at this point it has to be some of the cheapest terrain I've bought.

Thanks guys. Not bothered about the skulls as I would flock over those sections. Mainly looking for something that is strong and lightweight.

Then perhaps you should consider Kallistra's Hexon II.

This would be better Pete, unless you're in a hurry link

There was a Kickstarter campaign recently for boards like GW's Realm of Battle boards, but with a variety of themes. Can't remember who it was, though.

Alternatively, 6mm MDF is cheap and fairly lightweight.

Kallistra is interesting.

I had one but I gave it away. I was nice enough but I found storage space an issue. I just don't have space for terrain tiles, period.

The Pied Piper20 May 2013 8:21 a.m. PST

No to hexes I'm afraid.

Norrins20 May 2013 8:47 a.m. PST

Damn, another Kickstarter I've missed that I would've invested in.

MajorB20 May 2013 10:55 a.m. PST

No to hexes I'm afraid.

If you get the ready flocked boards, the hexes are not as noticeable as you might think.

The Pied Piper20 May 2013 11:59 a.m. PST

OK, thanks.

The question I have is whether the realm of battle board can be assembled in something other than an X by 4' configuration, I.e., could you do a 6'x6' using expansion sets?

The Pied Piper20 May 2013 3:17 p.m. PST

Yes I think so.

Acharnement20 May 2013 4:31 p.m. PST

They are very sturdy, nigh indestructible, but when you have to carry all 6 of them farther than to the car, the weight becomes a factor. I bought a set second-hand for a friend and the lugging back home was difficult. BTW- if you do buy a set, the carrying bag comes with a handle strap and a shoulder strap. The handle strap has started to tear away from the bag so I would recommend using the shoulder strap as much as possible.

timlillig20 May 2013 6:10 p.m. PST

I do not have one, but have used the battle board quite a bit. They can be combined to make a 6x6 board. I think they are overpriced.

Pictors Studio20 May 2013 11:18 p.m. PST

I use the shoulder strap all the time. The weight is less cumbersome than the size over your shoulder. I usually carry it and a tub of minis when I put on a game. I have the original six boards in there plus two expansion ones.

You can certainly make other sizes than 4 feet wide. With the addition of a 4x4 zuzzy mat I played a game earlier today on an 8x6 foot table.

Pictors Studio20 May 2013 11:19 p.m. PST

What I had meant to say in the first graph was that I have all eight of the boards in one carrying case. The weight of it is not much of an issue.

BigNickR20 May 2013 11:21 p.m. PST

DAMN! That was a kickstarter i missed… Woulda funded the HECK out of that urban set…

Barks121 May 2013 2:45 a.m. PST

They're not bad.

Here's mine, with details on painting and getting rid of the skullz:
