I am a complete novice when it comes to WW2 naval games and would like some advice. I have come across the above game and although it is difficult to buy, do you think that buying the models from Ebay or somewhere and then hopefully printing out the cards is something that can be done, or just buy the models and look for a different rule set that gives values to each ship or just buy different models to suit a particular rule set, which do you consider to be my best option?

I suppose for the models and a rule set my maximum spend would be 100-150 Pounds Sterling.

PS I do have a nice Holtz hex mat with 3 and 5 inch hexes on.

I enjoy the game as printed.
The ships are a good way to go as far as I am concerned.
I believe you can download a PDF of the rules on the axis allies website.

A friend of mine and I have enjoyed the free Easyships rules, available here.

We used Panzerschiffe ships, available here

which are much cheaper and not "collectible" as are the WaS miniatures.

Axis and Allies is an unusual scale, and doesn't match commercially available minis easily -- at least as far as I've seen. So if you really want the Bismarck, you gotta pay the collector's prices. If you really want a convoy of troop ships, you pray it didn't show up on the "Rare" lists of some long-ago out of print expansion.

If I were entering this niche, I'd pick what part of the war interests me. See what ships were involved, speculate how much it would cost to pull it together, and compare to buying metal ships that need to be painted.

are Mongoose now doing ww2 ships in the same scale as the A&A ones?

Dn Jackson20 May 2013 7:02 a.m. PST

Mongoose is indeed doing ships in the A&A scale.

Damn nice models too from Mongoose…

I love War at Sea and have every model with duplicates of most. The difference is I have been at it since the first release. You can still readily get the later sets, but the early ones especially set 1 and 2 care going to cost a pretty penny. Unfortuntaley the first two sets contain many of the iconic and most desirable units.

The scale is unique (yes Mongoose has now introduced 1/1800 as well), but now that I have all the models I use them for all my WWII naval gaming and they work quite nice since they come pre-painted. With some minor touch ups you can make them look even nicer to appeal to the masses. I have seen some who professionally paint them and they look as nice as any other models on the market.

The Game itself is nice and simple which provides a naval gaming flavor, but in no way is it a true naval wargame in comparision to other rules sets like GQ, VaS or Naval Thunder. Very nice introductory system though and great for a quick game. As previously stated you can take the models and move on to other systems which makes them versitile.

While for all intent and purposes that game is no longer in print it still has a very devoted following. The first set of fan cards has already been produced and printed for sale with WoTC blessing. A second set is now in the works.

If you want more info on the game itself and the many aspects that go with it there is a forum dedicated to it as well as the other WotC Mini games.
