Since my, relatively recent, sojourn with WFB 3e I've noticed myself increasingly attracted to the less outlandish corners of fantasy. Not that I've any less love for my Chaos and Slann armies
but the quasi-historical human factions are starting to look mighty interesting these days. First it was the Bretonnians (in their earlier dirty French mode)
which led to my reading a couple books on the HYW
and my slight addiction to the Crusader Kings computer game. Now, thanks to my interest in the pulpier Lustria setting (and early versions of WFB's Albion) I'm suddenly all obsessed with medieval Danes and
whatever was going on in 'Ireland'. I'm too the point where I'm dual-purposing a lot of my miniature purchases with an eye toward historical skirmish. I can't see ever dropping fantasy (or scifi) completely but games like Saga and Dux Britanniarum are really calling out to me (I'm guessing 'real' historical gamers might see those games as psuedo-historical but whatever). Thank goodness WFB didn't have a proxy-Napoleonic faction or I'd really be screwed. |

That's how I got into historical gaming (I was always into history), but with 40k instead. My Imperial Guard armies became ever more WWII German and US inspired and once I picked up a few of the old West Wind miniatures there was no looking back. Now, instead of a sci fi and fantasy gamer that dabbled in historicals, I am a full fledged historical gamer that occasionally dabbles in sci fi and fantasy out of nostalgia
Come, join us on the right side of gaming. Muahahahaha. |

Welcome aboard, I play SAGA and I enjoy it. However these rules are nothing like Warhammer in any of its forms. Just letting you know that's all. |

John the OFM has forgiven you. This is a high honor. Welcome to our happy band. |

I went the other way. I started with historicals and then found WHFB, and played that almost exclusively. But then I found my way back into historicals. They both have great positives, and they both have their flaws. But I like playing both. No reason to limit yourself. |

Why can't we all get along? Can't sci-fi, fantasy and historical gamers live in peace? |

I got in from Warhammer too. Now it is the vast majority of what I do. |

. :)))) |

It goes in phases,I'm an historical gamer that sometimes slips to space or fantasy. If you consider the Bretonnians there is also the landsknecht links into the Renaissance and the Great Italian Wars. Good introduction to that is Charles Oman's "Art of War in the 16th Century". |

I've swung back and forth between historical and sci-fi/fantasy stuff my whole life. My current fave is sci-fi but who knows what next week/month/year will bring. I find myself influenced by media external to gaming. For instance after the Hobbit movie we were playing Fantasy RPGs for a while. Nothing wrong with a bit of variety. |

Congratulations. I suspect you will adapt well, and be able to figure out what to do with all that extra money you'll be saving, by purchasing much more reasonably priced minis. Of course, if you are like most, you won't actually save it, but will have a lot more figures, and/or armies to choose from, produced by a variety of manufacturers, in various scales. |

As a historical gamer since the 1962 I'll let you in on a secret. All gaming is fantasy gaming. It just depends on the shape and form of the tokens you use. I've never played war hammer or the like but I've done AD&D and others. All those fantasy creatures are nice, but for me it always came down to the real life drama, the heroism, and the pathos of it. Fantasy novels are fine and fun, but when you stand at the spot where something really happened- like the high water mark at Gettysburg, or Omaha Beach, or Cannae
or even read about the tragedy and suffering of war
That is where the heart is caught. |

Napoleonic Faction? Long ago I built up Frenchy Space Orks! Plastic tubing for shakos, tiny pompoms from the craft store. |

Not much historical gaming on my part. I'm interested in doing that, but none of my friends are. |

For me Warhammer as also the gateway into historicals. Now like many above I mostly play historical with the occasional fantasy or science fiction game tossed in. And then there is VSF
